What to do?

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

A few years ago, I was asked by my son-in-law, a new believer, if there was a book I could recommend that explained the Christian faith and what he needed to do now? I could not think of a book of Christianity 101 that could explain that fully outside of the word of God.

Here is what I suggest new believers do. Start by getting a complete Bible, Old and New Testaments (the New is a completion of the Old) and read the Gospel of John (the 4th book in the New Testament) It focuses on the humanity and the Deity of Jesus. He is 100% man and 100% God (John 1:1, 14). He called every person who would believe before the foundation of the Earth was set (Ephesians 1:4).

While I do not recommend a specific church denomination find a church that is faithful to teaching sound doctrine. My greatest growth as a believer came from attending a church that taught from Genesis 1:1 through Revelation 22:21. Be discerning, ask questions and read the word of God daily and you will be able to discern a counterfeit doctrine from a Scripturally sound one.

Finally, I can say with certainty you will never find a perfect church, but that’s OK, search for a fellowship of believers anyway. We’re all imperfect. If you were hurt by anyone in a church or by a Christian at work, school, or anywhere else, remember those people were imperfect and were not nailed to a cross for you. Put your eyes on Jesus.  Christ did not hurt you; imperfect people did.

Do not hold a grudge but forgive them. When you forgive it is mostly for your benefit so that any corruption it caused can be lanced and the process of healing can start. A bitter and angry spirit only separates us from an active and vibrant relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus did not make forgiveness optional but said we must forgive (Luke 17:4). Forgiveness is a choice. Release the burden.

The message of the Gospel is so simple a 4-year-old understands it when she sings “Jesus loves me, this I know,” and so powerful and profound scholars cannot adequately explain it. I like to remind everyone that Jesus is a personal Savior, for He deals so personally and tenderly with every one of us. In closing beloved if you have just believed or drifted away after hitting a rocky patch on life’s highway, be encouraged for He never left you. He brought you back today to let you know that, and to remind you of the dedicated love He holds for you.

If you are seeking and unsure all I can do, is again ask why not trust Jesus? Really, what have you got to lose? Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. If He is not real you can go about your business having lost nothing. But you can experience His reality as millions of believers have. You may be very amazed at what you find in that reality. Just ask Him. God bless you in your journey!

No guardes rencor, sino perdóalas.
