Figgering it Out

 

Then the word of the LORD came to me: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent away from this place to the land of the Babylonians.’” Jeremiah 1:4 (NIV)

Dad was from Texas. He told me that just before a tornado appeared, the wind would suddenly stop, followed by a quiet calm. One only had seconds to take cover. Growing up in Southern California where we never saw a tornado, I had never given it much thought until I relocated to Missouri. One evening, I was coaching a company softball team from third base at a local park. A strong wind had been blowing all day.

The lights around the field had just come on. The wind was still blowing with scattered clouds. I was looking down the baseline toward home plate when the wind instantly stopped, followed by an eerie calm. I thought, this is exactly how Dad said it would be just before a tornado.

I nervously looked to see what everyone on the field was going to do. No one seemed concerned, and continued to play their positions, that is until hail was seen falling in the field lights. When the second baseman yelled “HAIL!” it was every player for themselves. It’s funny now, but at the time nobody was willing to take one for the team because the team was running for the dugout with me right behind them!

We had just piled into the dugout when that beast roared over the top of us. The common reference to tornados sounding like freight trains do not do it justice. The closest I can compare the noise and vibration to would be to being surrounded on all four sides by Niagara Falls. If you have been to Niagara Falls you can have a pretty good idea of what I am saying. Fortunately, no one was injured. I remember thinking, ‘Dad sure had that sign right!’

Of the many signs of the last days, perhaps the greatest is the reestablishment of Israel, for Biblical prophecy involves its national presence, both past, present, and future. Ezekiel and Isaiah foretold Israel would be brought up from its graves and back to the land, to be restored as a nation in one day (Ezekiel 37:12-14, Isaiah 66:8). After its final destruction by Rome in 135 AD and the Jewish dispersion, nearly 1,813 years later, on May 14, 1948, the dry bones of Israel stood up and came out of the graves of the Nazi Holocaust to return to the land promised to them by God.

Satan knows Scripture better than we do. He recognizes if there are no Jews, there will be no Israel for Jesus to come back to, and God’s plan to fully redeem Creation will be thwarted. He knows his time is short and God’s judgment of him will be fulfilled. He is busy ramping up unreasoned and irrational hatred of the Jews so that Israel will be destroyed, and its name no longer remembered (Psalm 83:2-4).

But take heart, beloved. Israel is here to stay! Jesus said concerning those who see the prophetic things happening before His return: “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away (Matthew 24:34-35). We are that generation. Not all will live to see all things completed, but not all will die before God accomplishes all the things He said He will do.  

We live in prophetic times that many have longed to see. The fig tree is one of the last fruit trees to blossom in Israel and does so as summer is about to appear. Israel is metaphorically referred to as the fig tree, and the Jews, both good and bad, as figs (Joel 1:7, Hosea 9:10, Jeremiah Chap. 24, & Matthew 24:32). The fig tree miraculously blossomed 76 years ago. The prophetic signs are easy to read and if you have Christ in your heart, it is a lot easier than coaching third base when the wind stops. Resolviéndolo

Papá era de Texas. Me dijo que justo antes de que apareciera un tornado, el viento se detenía repentinamente, seguido de una calma tranquila. Uno solo tenía unos segundos para ponerse a cubierto. Al crecer en el sur de California, donde nunca vimos un tornado, nunca había pensado mucho en ello hasta que me mudé a Missouri. Una noche, estaba entrenando a un equipo de softbol de la compañía desde la tercera base en un parque local. Un fuerte viento había estado soplando todo el día.

Las luces alrededor del campo acababan de encenderse. Allí el viento seguía soplando con nubes dispersas. Estaba mirando hacia la línea de fondo hacia el plato cuando el viento se detuvo instantáneamente, seguido de una calma espeluznante. Pensé, así es exactamente como papá dijo que sería justo antes de un tornado.

Miré nerviosamente para ver qué iban a hacer todos en el campo. Nadie parecía preocupado, y continuaron jugando sus posiciones, hasta que se vio granizo caer en las luces del campo. Cuando el segunda base gritó "¡Salve!", cada jugador iba por su cuenta. Es gracioso ahora, pero en ese momento nadie estaba dispuesto a tomar uno para el equipo porque el equipo estaba corriendo hacia el dugout conmigo justo detrás de ellos.

Acabábamos de amontonarnos en el banquillo cuando esa bestia rugió por encima de nosotros. La referencia común a los tornados que suenan como trenes de carga no le hace justicia. Lo más cercano a lo que puedo comparar el ruido y la vibración sería estar rodeado por los cuatro lados por las cataratas del Niágara. Si has estado en las Cataratas del Niágara, puedes tener una idea bastante clara de lo que estoy diciendo. Afortunadamente, nadie resultó herido. Recuerdo que pensé: '¡Papá seguro que tenía ese letrero bien!'

De las muchas señales de los últimos días, quizás la más grande es el restablecimiento de Israel, porque la profecía bíblica involucra su presencia nacional, tanto en el pasado, como en el presente y en el futuro. Ezequiel e Isaías predijeron que Israel sería levantado de sus tumbas y de regreso a la tierra, para ser restaurado como nación en un día (Ezequiel 37:12-14, Isaías 66:8). Después de su destrucción final por Roma en el año 135 d.C. y la dispersión judía, casi 1.813 años después, el 14 de mayo de 1948, los huesos secos de Israel se levantaron y salieron de las tumbas del Holocausto nazi para regresar a la tierra prometida por Dios.

Satanás conoce las Escrituras mejor que nosotros. Él reconoce que si no hay judíos, no habrá Israel al que Jesús pueda regresar, y el plan de Dios para redimir completamente a la Creación se verá frustrado. Sabe que su tiempo es corto y que el juicio de Dios sobre él se cumplirá. Está ocupado aumentando el odio irracional e irracional hacia los judíos para que Israel sea destruido y su nombre ya no sea recordado (Salmo 83:2-4).

Pero anímate, amado. ¡Israel está aquí para quedarse! Jesús dijo acerca de los que ven las cosas proféticas que suceden antes de Su regreso: "De cierto les digo que esta generación ciertamente no pasará hasta que todas estas cosas hayan sucedido. El cielo y la tierra pasarán, pero mis palabras no pasarán (Mateo 24:34-35). Nosotros somos esa generación. No todos vivirán para ver todas las cosas completadas, pero no todos morirán antes de que Dios logre todas las cosas que Él dijo que haría. 

Vivimos en tiempos proféticos que muchos han anhelado ver. La higuera es uno de los últimos árboles frutales en florecer en Israel y lo hace cuando el verano está a punto de aparecer. A Israel se le conoce metafóricamente como la higuera, y a los judíos, tanto buenos como malos, como higos (Joel 1:7, Oseas 9:10, Jeremías Cap. 24 y Mateo 24:32). La higuera floreció milagrosamente hace 76 años. Las señales proféticas son fáciles de leer y si tienes a Cristo en tu corazón, es mucho más fácil que entrenar la tercera base cuando el viento se detiene. Gracia y paz a ti.
