A Bearhug Kind of Love

Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 1st Peter 1:22 (KJV)

When I was twelve, I was at a Christian Kid’s Camp for a week when I got into a tiff with a roommate. We had a grumpy old guy whose job it was to ‘arbitrate’ dissentions among the many youths. He wore a wooden badge with the name El Coppo and mostly spent his time sitting on his cabin’s porch in a rocking chair. The word was “Don’t get called on the porch with El Coppo or you’ll be sorry.” Well, I got there Sunday and my roommate and I were on his porch by Wednesday. By El Coppo being the camp ‘arbitrator,’ I discovered it was not to reconcile us in the love of Christ but by threat of kicking us out of camp if we didn’t knock it off.

We both were told to shake and apologize. The kid and I had to bunk in the same cabin for the rest of the week and we shook hands but the apologies were superficial and all we had was a ceasefire. It wasn’t a love that was genuine or heartfelt but a love that was faked.

I like the King James word of a love unfeigned. It means a love not done in one’s own power, nor done with a superficial, or faked attitude. It is a love that when allowed, can sink into the heart, mind, and soul like water into parched and thirsty ground. For El Coppo a ceasefire was fine as long as his porch remained clear. My heart attitude and that of my antagonist was the problem. Our ceasefire at a church-sponsored Christian kid’s camp was full-on hypocrisy.

To be sincere means without ‘hypocrisy.’ Peter points to a depth of Christ’s relational love you have with believers that demonstrates the truest change of heart (John 13:35). It’s a bearhug kind of love. Giving yourself over to that perfect love means all evil thoughts and feelings regarding your Christian brothers and sisters can be taken captive by Christ bringing you to regard them with His power (2nd Corinthians 10:5). This kind of love is agape (Ah-gop-pay), a love that is an affectionate and benevolent love. It only comes from a heart sincerely surrendered to Christ’s light burden of trust and obedience (Matthew 11:28-30). It is expressed ‘in an all-out manner with an intense strain.’

Don’t look now but the world is watching. How will they know you are a Christian without witnessing your love? Instead of, “See, I told you all Christians are hypocrites,” they will ask you with amazement, “How are you able to love like that?” It only comes from the power of your risen Savior and your surrender to it. True and unfeigned love is your testament to them that you are what you confess you are, that you truly possess the meaning of real love. It is love unfeigned. It is love not faked under threat. When the world sees it, they will know you are His disciple. You purify your soul in obeying that.

It's easier to not hold onto those animosities, hurts and resentments that are in the past when your hands are full of a sincere bearhug. That is agape, the meaning of love unfeigned.

Maranatha,

Ken
