“The
God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and
does not live in temples built by hands.” Acts 17:24 (NIV)
Author and speaker Hal Lindsey tells a humorous experience he had after becoming a Christian. He was attending a Bible study when a lady interrupted the pastor saying, “Pastor, there are teenagers chewing gum in the sanctuary!” The pastor who understood Paul’s explanation of temples of the Holy Spirit (1st Corinthians 6:19) did not miss a beat and replied, “Sister, I beg to differ. The sanctuaries are chewing the gum!”
We certainly
need to honor, respect, and take good care of our physical places of worship.
To worship in filthy and disheveled settings dishonors the places where we draw
near to God in corporate worship. But putting more emphasis and regard on a
building while minimizing the special work Christ Jesus assigned His Holy
Spirit to have within us is just practicing religion.
Religion
speaks of manmade rules that can become traditions in the guise of doctrines
touted as ‘gospel truth.’ They can become avenues for those in authority to
dominate with biases that have no basis in Scripture. Christianity is not rules
that make us righteous. It is righteousness that comes through a relationship
with Christ which is an association by bond. That bond begins the moment we
believe in His gift of salvation for the forgiveness of our sins.
Christ came
to establish a life of relationship with humanity, and the relationship He
establishes is in the sanctuary of the heart. He did not come to earth with a
long list of ‘Do this and get squashed.’ Some people even believe He wound up
the earth, tossed it into the great black void and said, “Good luck.” A God of
love would not do something like that. I would call that a god of misfortune
and evil which sounds a lot like Satan, the god of this world (2nd
Corinthians 4:4).
God tells us
differently. Listen to what He says: “Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as snow; though
they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool” (Isaiah 1:18). That
sounds to me like someone who is rational, wise, and approachable, like someone
who is not limited to any building made by hands.
I agree He
is the One who created all things and set the universe on its course, but I will
not agree He left us to suffer and die in it alone. He not only remained with
us but laid His own life down to save us from our rebellion against Him. That
salvation was through His Son Jesus Christ who God revealed to us through Moses,
the Law, and the prophets (Luke 24:27). God raised up men and women who in
witnessing His Word in the flesh were willing to take His message to a doubtful
and hostile world and die doing it. It is one thing to spread a lie, but very
few are willing to die for it, knowing it is.
Being Relational
with us shows us who He is so we will not misunderstand His intentions. That is
to interact with us, uninhibited by the fossilized and unscriptural biases of
men. His habitation is not limited to wallboard and plaster, or chewing gum and
teenagers. He dwells within sanctuaries of clean hearts, even if those
sanctuaries might occasionally pop their gum in the pews.

No hagas eso
Ciertamente necesitamos honrar, respetar y cuidar bien
nuestros lugares físicos de culto. Adorar en ambientes sucios y desaliñados
deshonra los lugares donde nos acercamos a Dios en la adoración colectiva. Pero
poner más énfasis y consideración en un edificio mientras se minimiza el
trabajo especial que Cristo Jesús asignó a Su Espíritu Santo para que tuviera
dentro de nosotros es simplemente practicar la religión.
La religión habla de reglas hechas por el hombre que
pueden convertirse en tradiciones bajo la apariencia de doctrinas promocionadas
como 'la verdad del evangelio'. Pueden convertirse en vías para que los que
tienen autoridad dominen con prejuicios que no tienen base en las Escrituras.
El cristianismo no son reglas que nos hacen justos. Es la justicia que viene a
través de una relación con Cristo, que es una asociación por vínculo. Ese
vínculo comienza en el momento en que creemos en su regalo de salvación para el
perdón de nuestros pecados.
Cristo vino a establecer una vida de relación con la
humanidad, y la relación que Él establece está en el santuario del corazón. No
vino a la tierra con una larga lista de 'Haz esto y serás aplastado'. Algunas
personas incluso creen que Él enrolló la tierra, la arrojó al gran vacío negro
y dijo: "Buena suerte". Un Dios de amor no haría algo así. Yo
llamaría a eso un dios de la desgracia y la maldad que se parece mucho a
Satanás, el dios de este mundo (2 Corintios 4:4).
Dios nos dice lo contrario. Escuchen lo que Él dice: "Venid
ahora, arreglemos el asunto", dice el Señor. "Aunque vuestros pecados
sean como la grana, como la nieve será; si fuesen rojos como el carmesí,
vendrán a ser como la lana" (Isaías 1:18). Eso me suena como alguien
que es racional, sabio y accesible, como alguien que no se limita a cualquier
edificio hecho por las manos.
Estoy de acuerdo en que Él es el que creó todas las
cosas y puso el universo en su curso, pero no estaré de acuerdo en que nos dejó
sufrir y morir solo en él. Él no solo permaneció con nosotros, sino que dio su
propia vida para salvarnos de nuestra rebelión contra él. Esa salvación fue a
través de Su Hijo Jesucristo, a quien Dios nos reveló a través de Moisés, la
Ley y los profetas (Lucas 24:27). Dios levantó hombres y mujeres que, al dar
testimonio de Su Palabra en la carne, estaban dispuestos a llevar Su mensaje a
un mundo dudoso y hostil y morir haciéndolo. Una cosa es difundir una mentira,
pero muy pocos están dispuestos a morir por ello, sabiendo que lo es.
Ser Relacional con nosotros nos muestra quién es Él,
por lo que no malinterpretaremos Sus intenciones. Eso es interactuar con
nosotros, sin inhibiciones por los prejuicios fosilizados y antibíblicos de los
hombres. Su habitación no se limita a los paneles de yeso y el yeso, o a la
goma de mascar y los adolescentes. Él habita dentro de santuarios de corazones
limpios, incluso si esos santuarios ocasionalmente pueden reventar su chicle en
los bancos.
