Well Worth the Wait

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. John 14:1 (NIV)

Anxiety it seems is the biggest problem for humans in general. Everyone has a personal way of trying to deal with anxieties. Sometimes they can evolve into addictive traits from medicating through substance abuse, and sexual encounters to shopping, spending, school, and even work. These things bring temporary relief but never last. We must keep returning to the well, and most times that well becomes so deep we can no longer draw enough satisfaction in the things that used to mollify. Our state of being can begin to feel helpless.

The inner circle of the disciples had been dealing with their master’s continued talking of impending death at the hands of evil men (Luke 24:7). If He were the promised Mashiach, would He not save Israel from the yoke of all oppression, usher in the Messianic Kingdom over the earth, and elevate them to high rank and position?

As time progressed, they found Him determined to die. Then, on the night of the last Passover Jesus would celebrate with them, His disciples would also learn one of them would betray Him! The last weeks of the disciple’s time with their rabbi brought much anxiety.

What was Jesus saying? Why did His words go against what the religious leaders, and the people of Israel were expecting the Messiah to do and be? The rabbis certainly had not taught of a suffering Messiah, but one of strength and power. That would happen in the future, but not at this time. The first visitation by Messiah was to make full penance for sin by His shedding of blood on the cross. It would be the Father’s final atoning sacrifice with the gift of eternal life freely offered to all that believed in its truth.  

At the closing of this last Passover Seder Jesus would eat in this lifetime, He took time to comfort His remaining eleven disciples (Judas having departed to betray Him). He added a physical aspect to their eternal life meant to calm nervous stomachs and palpitating hearts. He began with trust; believe in Him as you would in God. Then apply that trust. What He would prepare in the vastness of His Father’s house for them would be given to them. Eternal life in the conscious soul begins when we believe, but there is a physical aspect that Jesus has prepared for us at His return for the Church, His Bride.

Jesus in His lifetime fulfilled at least 315 major Old Testament prophesies, some that He could not have manipulated. Two that were beyond His control were being conceived of the seed (human egg only) of a woman, without the seed (sperm) of a man. It would bring about a virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14). Neither could He have chosen the place of His birth in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).

In the Book of Revelation, it is Jesus who reveals how He would do away with unrighteousness, renewing the earth to its former pristine beauty, calm, and peace. As Revelation closes, He who was seated on the throne commanded John to write it all down, “for these words are trustworthy and true.” Anxieties will come, but so will the things Jesus has promised those who believe on Him, beginning with His return to bring us to Himself.

Take heart, dear Saint. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful (Hebrews 10:23). In the scope of eternity, the fulfillment of that time will be quicker than the movement of your eye, replacing all anxiety and suffering with a greater weight of glory (2^nd Corinthians 4:17-18, 1^st Cor. 2:9). When it arrives, we will all say together “It was indeed well worth the wait.”

Vale la pena la espera

La ansiedad, al parecer, es el mayor problema para los humanos en general. Todo el mundo tiene una forma personal de tratar de lidiar con las ansiedades. A veces pueden evolucionar hacia rasgos adictivos, desde la medicación hasta el abuso de sustancias y los encuentros sexuales hasta las compras, los gastos, la escuela e incluso el trabajo. Estas cosas traen un alivio temporal, pero nunca duran. Debemos seguir regresando al pozo, y la mayoría de las veces ese pozo se vuelve tan profundo que ya no podemos obtener suficiente satisfacción en las cosas que solían apaciguar. Nuestro estado de ser puede comenzar a sentirnos impotentes.

El círculo íntimo de los discípulos había estado lidiando con el continuo discurso de su maestro de la muerte inminente a manos de hombres malvados (Lucas 24:7). Si Él fuera el Mashíaj prometido, ¿no salvaría a Israel del yugo de toda opresión, introduciría el Reino Mesiánico sobre la tierra y lo elevaría a un alto rango y posición?

A medida que pasaba el tiempo, lo encontraron decidido a morir. Luego, en la noche de la última Pascua, Jesús celebraría con ellos, ¡Sus discípulos también se enterarían de que uno de ellos lo traicionaría! Las últimas semanas del tiempo del discípulo con su rabino trajeron mucha ansiedad.

¿Qué estaba diciendo Jesús? ¿Por qué sus palabras iban en contra de lo que los líderes religiosos y el pueblo de Israel esperaban que el Mesías hiciera y fuera? Los rabinos ciertamente no habían enseñado sobre un Mesías sufriente, sino uno de fuerza y poder. Eso sucedería en el futuro, pero no en este momento. La primera visitación del Mesías fue hacer plena penitencia por el pecado mediante el derramamiento de sangre en la cruz. Sería el sacrificio expiatorio final del Padre con el don de la vida eterna ofrecido gratuitamente a todos los que creyeran en su verdad. 

Al final de esta última Pascua que Jesús comería en esta vida, se tomó el tiempo para consolar a sus once discípulos restantes (Judas había partido para traicionarlo). Agregó un aspecto físico a su vida eterna destinado a calmar los estómagos nerviosos y los corazones palpitantes. Comenzó con confianza; cree en Él como lo harías en Dios. Luego aplique esa confianza. Lo que Él prepararía para ellos en la inmensidad de la casa de Su Padre les sería dado. La vida eterna en el alma consciente comienza cuando creemos, pero hay un aspecto físico que Jesús ha preparado para nosotros en Su regreso a la Iglesia, Su Esposa.

Jesús en su vida cumplió al menos 315 profecías importantes del Antiguo Testamento, algunas que no pudo haber manipulado. Dos que estaban fuera de Su control estaban siendo concebidos de la simiente (solo óvulo humano) de una mujer, sin la simiente (esperma) de un hombre. Provocaría un nacimiento virginal (Isaías 7:14). Tampoco pudo haber elegido el lugar de su nacimiento en Belén (Miqueas 5:2).

En el Libro de Apocalipsis, es Jesús quien revela cómo eliminaría la injusticia, renovando la tierra a su antigua belleza, calma y paz prístinas. Al final de Apocalipsis, Aquel que estaba sentado en el trono le ordenó a Juan que lo escribiera todo, "porque estas palabras son confiables y verdaderas". Vendrán ansiedades, pero también las cosas que Jesús ha prometido a los que creen en Él, comenzando con Su regreso para llevarnos a Él.

Anímate, querido Santo. Aferrémonos inquebrantablemente a la esperanza que profesamos, porque fiel es el que prometió" (Hebreos 10:23). En el ámbito de la eternidad, el cumplimiento de ese tiempo será más rápido que el movimiento de tu ojo, reemplazando toda ansiedad y sufrimiento con un mayor peso de gloria (2 Corintios 4:17-18, 1 Corintios 2:9). Cuando llegue, todos diremos juntos "De hecho, valió la pena la espera".
