For it is by grace you have been
saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of
God—not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
My dad committed his life to Christ in 1947 at
the Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles. In the ensuing years he became a dedicated
Christian and quite knowledgeable in what the Bible taught.
At the age of 56 he was diagnosed with terminal
cancer of the liver. It was a shock to the entire family, but he seemed calmer
about it than the rest of us. I thought he was taking it quite well until I
stopped by to see him one evening after work.
As we were talking, I saw a real sense of worry
on his face. He began to talk about how he knew when the cancer ended his life he
would immediately be with Christ. Then concerning meeting the Lord, he said
something that floored me; “I wish I had done more for him.”
He was worried he did not have enough works for
Him on his side of the ledger and he would be shamed by the Lord’s disappointment.
I could understand how he could feel that way as Adam’s fall has affected our souls
with a profound sense of imperfection and shame. I am mostly sure if we are
totally honest many of us feel that way. When we think about standing before God
as we consider our works for Him, we feel the need to cover our shame with fig
leaf aprons of do-it-yourself religious works. Works have a place in our spiritual
journey when done to honor God and never when done as a power to save our souls
outside of Christ.
We know the Scripture of Romans 8:1 that there is
no condemnation for those in Christ, but Satan the Accuser is a master at
reminding us of our past weaknesses and failures and those always seem to carry
more weight than any good we have done.
Paul writes to each of our wounded hearts that Christ
is enough; “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1).
If you have given your life to Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins you are justified, found totally righteous in Christ.
Fully accepted and fully understood is true rest and Peace.
There will be no S.A.T. works test to open the
gates of heaven to you or any oral interrogation on a life of your own
righteous deeds that guarantees you a place on streets of gold. He won’t ask how
rich a portfolio you had, or how many properties you owned. He won’t ask how
many souls you’ve led to faith in Him this week. He won’t want to know how you’ve
treated your family. He won’t ask if you faithfully honored your mother and
father. He won’t want to know how you treated your kids, He won’t ask you if
you showed up at church every time the doors opened, He won’t ask if you
finished high school. He won’t ask if you had a flourishing trade, or any trade
at all. He won’t care if you’re a college graduate, a PhD, or if you dropped
out. He won’t ask if you were homeless. He won’t ask you if you lived in a ten-bedroom
home. He won’t want to know if you ever stole anything. He won’t ask if you
have been arrested or if you’ve ever been in jail or prison. He won’t ask if
you ever kicked the cat or dog, or teased the parakeet. That past medical
procedure that tortures you will not be mentioned, because it is forgiven. It
won’t matter to Him how long you worked at your jobs, or if you had a
promiscuous past. He won’t care that you kept an immaculate house or manicured lawns.
He won’t ask why you didn’t witness to more people at school or on the job, or
if you ever died on a cross to save the world!
While these are important things they will not
satisfy God’s demand for righteousness that will get you into heaven. Jesus
Christ said He is the only way. No one can come to the Father except through
Him (John 14:6). Heaven cannot be gained through following a commandment, doing
any kind of work, no matter how noble it may be. Heaven can only be gained
through belief in one person, the God-Man Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
their sins.
What He will do when He meets you as a
believer: He will greet you with arms open for that close-in and loving hug you
have desired, with no other criteria needed, other than that you asked Him to
save you from your sins through His sacrificial death on the cross. He will see
Himself in you and His nail scarred hand will be His receipt for His payment that
ransomed your soul. Christ offered the full gift of salvation that paid your
debt in full. It is God’s free gift, not your payment obligation. When
you believed on Christ you were baptized into Him and you put Him
and His righteousness on (Galatians 3:27). That is different from being
baptized in His name. Being baptized into Him means
establishing an intimate spiritual union with Him.
Dad had a mass on his liver the size of a
grapefruit. A lot of prayer went up and in a few months that followed, the mass
disappeared. The Lord gave us another six years with him. When he met his Lord,
I know it was with Christ’s open arms and Dad knowing He was always enough.
You will never be more loved than you are now.
You don’t have to live up to God. He reached down from heaven for you when you were
dead in your trespasses and sins and raised you up with Christ and
seated you with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 1:4).
There are
no Scriptures that say you need to carry any burden of earning righteousness.
That is the worst kind of spiritual torture and it is religion at its worst.
Drop the fig leaves. You have been clothed with
the righteousness of Christ. That is Peace with God. That is enough.
Maranatha,
Ken
Jesucristo (Romanos 5:1).
Si has entregado tu vida
semana. No querrá saber cómo has tratado a tu familia. No preguntará si
honraste fielmente a tu madre y a tu padre. No querrá saber cómo trataste a tus
No te preguntará si fuiste
No
No preguntará si alguna vez
Maranatha,
Ken
