All the Thief Had to Offer

 

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:42-43 (NIV)

Did you know there were many hostile and friendly eyewitnesses to the historical crucifixion of Jesus Christ? His followers who had the courage to be present at His execution wrote down what the Jewish Council and Romans said and did. They documented the words of the two thieves crucified on each side of the Son of Man, including all the things Jesus spoke from the cross (Luke 23:48-49, John 19:25-27).

One thief believed in Jesus as his Messiah and Lord and in that belief asked to be remembered. He had to do nothing to prove his worth to be remembered and accepted by the Incarnate God. Jesus did not give him a list of rules he should have followed to be good enough to come to Him. He asked for nothing from the thief, but instead offered him the gift of eternal life with Him. Jesus would complete God’s plan of full salvation in the coming hours when with His dying breath He would say, “It is finished!” (John 19:30).  

God has a long and perfect memory. He has always existed in time and outside of it, and from infinity past, has always had you at the forefront of His mind, with a vision for your life.

God can do that? He can name all the stars in the farthest reaches of the universe, hear 8 billion people’s thoughts individually and intervene for them personally, number the hairs on every head, and yet see when one of His sparrows die. Yes, He can do that.

When the Psalmist was discouraged, he asked, ”Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God,” (Psalm 42:5). The perfect timing for praise and trust is now.  

Grace and peace to you when your mind is troubled and you feel abandoned. Grace is His love and remembrance when we are given the unearned privilege of taking on the elegance and beauty of His Son’s perfection. The peace that follows passes our ability to fully define it.

In all eternity past, where there is no time, we have been in His continual memory. That kind of grace to all who have believed on the Son of God is truly amazing. To be remembered that way is the highest kind of Love and Remembrance.

As His children, we are that precious! It is the love and remembrance of Christ our Lord, the One who fully accepted a thief who in his open hand could only offer a single Roman nail.

Todo lo que el ladrón tenía para ofrecer

¿Sabías que hubo muchos testigos oculares hostiles y amistosos de la crucifixión histórica de Jesucristo? Sus seguidores, que tuvieron el coraje de estar presentes en su ejecución, escribieron lo que el Concilio Judío y los romanos dijeron e hicieron. Documentaron las palabras de los dos ladrones crucificados a cada lado del Hijo del Hombre, incluyendo todas las cosas que Jesús habló desde la cruz (Lucas 23:48-49, Juan 19:25-27).

Un ladrón creía en Jesús como su Mesías y Señor, y en esa creencia pidió ser recordado. No tuvo que hacer nada para demostrar su valía para ser recordado y aceptado por el Dios Encarnado. Jesús no le dio una lista de reglas que debería haber seguido para ser lo suficientemente bueno como para venir a Él. No le pidió nada al ladrón, sino que le ofreció el regalo de la vida eterna con Él. Jesús completaría el plan de Dios de salvación completa en las horas venideras cuando con su último aliento diría: "¡Consumado es!" (Juan 19:30). 

Dios tiene una memoria larga y perfecta. Él siempre ha existido en el tiempo y fuera de él, y desde el infinito pasado, siempre te ha tenido al frente de Su mente, con una visión para tu vida.

¿Dios puede hacer eso? Él puede nombrar todas las estrellas en los confines más lejanos del universo, escuchar los pensamientos de 8 mil millones de personas individualmente e intervenir por ellos personalmente, contar los cabellos de cada cabeza y, sin embargo, ver cuándo muere uno de Sus gorriones. Sí, Él puede hacer eso.

Cuando el salmista se desanimó, preguntó: "¿Por qué, alma mía, estás abatida? ¿Por qué tan perturbado dentro de mí? Poned vuestra esperanza en Dios, porque aún le alabaré, mi Salvador y mi Dios" (Salmo 42:5). El momento perfecto para el elogio y la confianza es ahora. 

Gracia y paz para ti cuando tu mente está perturbada y te sientes abandonado. La gracia es Su amor y recuerdo cuando se nos da el privilegio inmerecido de asumir la elegancia y la belleza de la perfección de Su Hijo. La paz que sigue supera nuestra capacidad de definirla plenamente.

En toda la eternidad pasada, donde no hay tiempo, hemos estado en Su memoria continua. Ese tipo de gracia para todos los que han creído en el Hijo de Dios es verdaderamente asombrosa. Ser recordado, ese camino es la clase más elevada de Amor y Recuerdo.

Como Sus hijos, ¡somos así de preciosos! Es el amor y el recuerdo de Cristo nuestro Señor, Aquel que aceptó plenamente a un ladrón que en su mano abierta solo podía ofrecer un solo clavo romano.

After the Whippin'

 

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. John 16:33 (NIV)

I was speaking to a young man of good spiritual judgment about many of the people of faith in the Bible that experienced deeply troubling times. He said, “At one time or another they all got whipped, Ken, but they all got back up again.” I had to agree with him as I recalled the many heroes from my childhood Sunday School classes. They got whipped once or twice, but they all got back up again.

Jesus said we would have troubles in our lives, each day having enough hardship waiting for us (Matthew 6:34). We can debate God all we want about trials and tribulations and blame Him for the woes of suffering in His Creation. We might sometimes snap at Him, “Why are You allowing this?” or even ask “Why are You doing this to me?” The short answer is; the reason lies not with God, but with our human race. The infection of sin has left our hearts broken and rebellious.

The thread of Creation’s groaning can be traced back to Eden, where God gave our first parents the opportunity to choose or refuse to obey His commandment. The troubles and suffering we endure are because they chose poorly.

So, why does He not answer every prayer when we ask for help in His name? He never said He could not or would not. He said He can do both (Matthew 19:26, John 14:13).

It has been my experience that when a prayer “in Jesus’ name” is uttered and it does not fulfill the purpose to glorify God through Christ, or the motive we pray in is questionable, then Jesus will not do it. John writes, This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him (1^st John 5:14-15).

Even if an answer is not what we were hoping for it is still an answer that comes from a perfectly holy, loving, and wise God. Because He is perfectly holy, all He does is perfect. We may not know the reason why we did not see the perfection in His answer this side of heaven, but perhaps one day in eternity we will.

Jesus did not promise us consistent favor among our peers, or that our finite understanding would get its way every time. It is somewhat frightening and humbling to me when the Lord demonstrates He is the only One with the power and wisdom to do it right every time. It can be frightening knowing how easily it has been throughout my life to pray with the wrong motive. It can humble me as I realize only the Triune God can answer any prayer fully and correctly.  

Getting whipped in this life is inevitable. Being helped to our feet by the Alpha and the Omega is the best part of any unfortunate circumstance. Jesus makes His ways known to us that we might have peace in understanding how He is strong to lift and deliver us. It teaches us to trust more fully and strengthens our determination that after any good whippin’ we may endure, that when He pulls us up with His strong right hand, we will still be willin’ to stay.

Después de los latigazos

Estaba hablando con un joven de buen juicio espiritual acerca de muchas de las personas de fe en la Biblia que experimentaron tiempos profundamente problemáticos. Él dijo: "En un momento u otro todos fueron azotados, Ken, pero todos se levantaron de nuevo". Tuve que estar de acuerdo con él al recordar a los muchos héroes de las clases de la Escuela Dominical de mi infancia. Los azotaron una o dos veces, pero todos volvieron a levantarse.

Jesús dijo que tendríamos problemas en nuestras vidas, cada día tendríamos suficientes dificultades esperándonos (Mateo 6:34). Podemos debatir con Dios todo lo que queramos acerca de las pruebas y tribulaciones y culparlo por los males del sufrimiento en Su Creación. A veces podríamos gritarle: "¿Por qué permites esto?" o incluso preguntarle: "¿Por qué me haces  esto?". La respuesta corta es; la razón no está en Dios, sino en nuestra raza humana. La infección del pecado ha dejado nuestros corazones rotos y rebeldes.

El hilo del gemido de la Creación se remonta al Edén, donde Dios dio a nuestros primeros padres la oportunidad de elegir o negarse a obedecer Su mandamiento. Los problemas y el sufrimiento que soportamos se deben a que eligieron mal.

Entonces, ¿por qué no responde a todas las oraciones cuando pedimos ayuda en su nombre? Él nunca dijo que no podía o que no lo haría. Él dijo que Él puede hacer ambas cosas (Mateo 19:26, Juan 14:13).

Ha sido mi experiencia que cuando una oración "en el nombre de Jesús" es pronunciada y no cumple el propósito de glorificar a Dios a través de Cristo, o el motivo por el cual oramos es cuestionable, entonces Jesús no lo hará. Juan escribe: Esta es la confianza que tenemos al acercarnos a Dios: que si pedimos algo conforme a su voluntad, él nos oye. Y si sabemos que él nos escucha, sea lo que sea que le pidamos, sabemos que tenemos lo que le pedimos (1 Juan 5:14-15).

Incluso si una respuesta no es lo que esperábamos, sigue siendo una respuesta que proviene de un Dios perfectamente santo, amoroso y sabio. Debido a que Él es perfectamente santo, todo lo que hace es perfecto. Es posible que no sepamos la razón por la cual no vimos la perfección en Su respuesta de este lado del cielo, pero tal vez algún día en la eternidad lo sabremos.

Jesús no nos prometió un favor constante entre nuestros semejantes, o que nuestro entendimiento finito se saldría con la suya cada vez. Es algo aterrador y humillante para mí cuando el Señor demuestra que Él es el único con el poder y la sabiduría para hacer las cosas bien cada vez. Puede ser aterrador saber lo fácil que ha sido a lo largo de mi vida orar con el motivo equivocado. Puede humillarme al darme cuenta de que solo el Dios Trino puede responder a cualquier oración de manera completa y correcta. 

Ser azotado en esta vida es inevitable. Ser ayudado a ponernos de pie por el Alfa y la Omega es la mejor parte de cualquier circunstancia desafortunada. Jesús nos da a conocer sus caminos para que podamos tener paz al entender cómo Él es fuerte para levantarnos y liberarnos. Nos enseña a confiar más plenamente y fortalece nuestra determinación de que después de cualquier buen azote que podamos soportar, que cuando Él nos levante con Su fuerte mano derecha, todavía estaremos dispuestos a quedarnos.

Two Clocks

 

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:4 (NIV)

Have you ever wondered why the time keepers in football games use two clocks? There is the Game Clock, and the Play Clock. The game clock counts down the overall time in each quarter. The play clock determines how many seconds the team on offense has left before they must snap the ball into play.

I have been mostly frustrated when at the end of a game my team is leading by a few points and the officials stop the game clock. It gives the opposing team a narrow window to gain points once play begins again, and perhaps gain a win. I have seen teams behind in the score pull a ‘Hail Mary’ (a final desperation play) that scored a few points to win a losing game. I am not a hardcore football fan, but when Arkansas takes a loss, it can turn my smile upside down.

God has His own game clock that is probably the one that is the hardest to live by. It has discouraged me more than anything else in my Christian experience when it has stopped. We exist in the age of instant gratification and live life by our own game clock. When the Lord’s game clock for us stops, we can judge His timing to be off and presumptuously snap a ball into play when He says, “Wait, I am still working here.”   

How can we adapt what we read in the Bible to help us live our lives in Christ when God calls a pause in our game plan? We hear the words of Jesus saying He has given us life that is abundant in blessing and satisfaction.

So, one who is not feeling abundantly satisfied or blessed might be discouraged, or after taking a hit or two give up and walk off the field leaving a defensive line vulnerable. Holes in a defensive line are weaknesses that any opposing team can exploit. Satan is a master of discouragement and when we leave the game, he and his unholy angels will take advantage of any hole we leave.

A ‘Win one for the Gipper’ speech or telling someone to “just pray about it,” will not get to the why and how of staying on the field. The most difficult thing we deal with in our Christian experience is the speed God works at, and especially when His game clock stops. 

James writes, Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him (James 1:12). It might be appropriate to also say blessed are the ones who persevere when the Game Clock stops. It can be frustrating and discourage us into giving up, but let us hold firm and persevere.

When we lament our ‘quiet moments’ before the Lord when His game clock stops, it is good to be reminded that He works in His own eternal time. The time He is taking buys us a greater weight of perfection to His ultimate glory that will mature, season, and temper us in our faith. He reminds us that His thoughts and ways are not how we would think or plan. Many times, when the game ends, we can cherish the grace and mercy He showed us as His clock ran down or stopped in play.

When our Heavenly Father’s Game clock pauses, His Play clock is still ticking. For those who love Him the seconds left when it starts again reward us with the promise of victory. The victory will not come with a trophy that tarnishes or fades, but with a shining crown of life that will last forever.

Dos relojes

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado por qué los cronometradores de los partidos de fútbol usan dos relojes? Está el reloj de juego y el reloj de juego. El reloj del juego cuenta regresivamente el tiempo total en cada cuarto. El reloj de juego determina cuántos segundos le quedan al equipo ofensivo antes de que deba poner el balón en juego.

La mayoría de las veces me he sentido frustrado cuando, al final de un partido, mi equipo va ganando por unos pocos puntos y los árbitros paran el reloj de partido. Le da al equipo contrario una ventana estrecha para ganar puntos una vez que el juego comienza de nuevo, y tal vez obtener una victoria. He visto a equipos que van por detrás en el marcador hacer un 'Ave María' (una última jugada de desesperación) que anotó algunos puntos para ganar un partido perdido. No soy un fanático empedernido del fútbol, pero cuando Arkansas sufre una pérdida, puede poner mi sonrisa patas arriba.

Dios tiene su propio reloj de juego que es probablemente el más difícil de vivir. Me ha desanimado más que cualquier otra cosa en mi experiencia cristiana cuando se ha detenido. Existimos en la era de la gratificación instantánea y vivimos la vida con nuestro propio reloj de juego. Cuando el reloj de juego del Señor para nosotros se detiene, podemos juzgar que Su tiempo está fuera de lugar y presuntuosamente poner una pelota en juego cuando Él dice: "Espera, todavía estoy trabajando aquí".  

¿Cómo podemos adaptar lo que leemos en la Biblia para ayudarnos a vivir nuestras vidas en Cristo cuando Dios llama a una pausa en nuestro plan de juego? Escuchamos las palabras de Jesús diciendo que Él nos ha dado vida que es abundante en bendición y satisfacción.

Por lo tanto, alguien que no se siente abundantemente satisfecho o bendecido puede desanimarse, o después de recibir uno o dos golpes, darse por vencido y abandonar el campo dejando vulnerable a una línea defensiva. Los agujeros en una línea defensiva son debilidades que cualquier equipo contrario puede explotar. Satanás es un maestro del desaliento y cuando dejemos el juego, él y sus ángeles impíos se aprovecharán de cualquier agujero que dejemos.

Un discurso de "Gana uno para el Gipper" o decirle a alguien que "solo ore por ello", no llegará al por qué y cómo de permanecer en el campo. Lo más difícil con lo que lidiamos en nuestra experiencia cristiana es la velocidad a la que Dios trabaja, y especialmente cuando Su reloj de juego se detiene. 

Santiago escribe: Bienaventurado el que persevera en la prueba porque, habiendo superado la prueba, esa persona recibirá la corona de la vida que el Señor ha prometido a los que lo aman (Santiago 1:12). Podría ser apropiado decir también bienaventurados los que perseveran cuando el reloj del juego se detiene. Puede ser frustrante y desanimarnos a rendirnos, pero mantengámonos firmes y perseveremos.

Cuando lamentamos nuestros "momentos de quietud" ante el Señor cuando Su reloj de juego se detiene, es bueno que se nos recuerde que Él obra en Su propio tiempo eterno. El tiempo que Él nos está tomando nos compra un mayor peso de perfección para Su gloria suprema que madurará, sazonará y templará nuestra fe. Él nos recuerda que Sus pensamientos y caminos no son como nosotros pensaríamos o planearíamos. Muchas veces, cuando el juego termina, podemos apreciar la gracia y la misericordia que Él nos mostró mientras Su reloj se agotaba o se detenía en el juego.

Cuando el reloj de juego de nuestro Padre Celestial se detiene, Su reloj de juego sigue funcionando. Para aquellos que lo aman, los segundos que quedan cuando comienza de nuevo nos recompensan con la promesa de la victoria. La victoria no llegará con un trofeo que se empañe o se desvanezca, sino con una corona brillante de vida que durará para siempre.

Touching the Apple of His Eye

 

For this is what the LORD Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye”—I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them. Zechariah 2:8-9 (NIV)

When the June 1967 Arab Israeli war was being waged, my girlfriend at the time and a couple of her friends were talking with one of her freshman high school teachers about it. Her teacher mentioned that with the massive armies that had Israel surrounded, it was outmanned and outgunned, and would be annihilated.

My girlfriend replied with certainty, “Oh, Israel will not only survive, but they will also win.”

“How do you know that?” he challenged. She said, “Because the Bible says so.” He scoffed at her fourteen-year-old ignorance.

On Saturday, the fifth day of the war, after Israel’s victory in taking the Golan Heights in heavy fighting the previous day, the five Arab armies had enough of Israel’s battlefield wins and sued for peace. The following day, Sunday, June 11 an armistice was signed. In just six days Israel had defeated five national armies that came against them at the same time, quadrupling its size through land it had captured which included Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula to the Suez Canal. God’s hand in helping the tiny Jewish nation was evident and the whole world was stunned.

On Monday morning, June 12, my girlfriend’s teacher came to her somewhat shaken and said, “You were right about Israel winning. Tell me what the Bible says about this.” She had an open avenue to share the gospel. Whether he later became a believer or not, God had his attention. Since its 1948 statehood, when Satan has unleashed his dogs of war upon God’s chosen nation, the dogs have been sent back to their masters yelping.

When Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948, the five well-armed Arab armies of Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq declared war on the tiny nation. The Jews fought with what little resources they had. Amir Tsarfati jokes that at that time the Israeli Air Force consisted of one airplane in which the pilot had to keep his right hand on the stick while throwing bombs out with his left.

By all accounts the Jewish state should have been annihilated in its 1948 War of Independence, and the 1956 Suez Crisis, and the 1967 Six-Day War, and the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and the 1982 Lebanon War, up to its current major conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah in its latest October 7^th War. In every conflict where it was victorious, it has not been only by arms or super power assistance, but by supernatural intervention. After the surprise attack of the ’73 Yom Kippur War where the outset looked grim for the Israelis, the overconfident cockiness of their Six Day War’s victories deflated. I recall one Israeli saying, “It was the God of Israel who saved us this time!”

Few who chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” know which river and sea it means, nor do they understand it means being rid of every Jew in the land. It calls for the Jews to be eradicated, from the Jordan River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, all the nation of Israel, a Second Jewish Holocaust!

Satan is doing his best to destroy Israel, but the Word of God says the nation will stand. The Messiah is not returning to New York City, Washington DC, London, or Paris. Nor on His return will His feet touch down on the Seven Hills of Rome, but on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, which was in Israel the last time I checked (Zechariah 14:4). He will rule the Earth in full strength and righteousness on the eternal throne of His ancestor David, from His capital city of Jerusalem (2^nd Samuel 7:16, Isaiah 2:1-4, Rev. 20:4). Satan understands no Jews means no news, except speaking of their total extermination, and no chosen people for the Messiah to return to.

Touching the apple of God’s eye speaks of touching the pupil or the most precious and sensitive part of His Being. Those who are bent on the destruction of the ones God has chosen as His very own will soon be plundered, and to their shame by the very ones they have enslaved! Yeshua Hamashiach, the Roaring Lion of Judah, will not allow the enemies of His people to stand forever, or be successful in their plans to exterminate them.

Israel has not been cut out of the covenant nor ever will be. The nation and Jewish people around the world are still here, yet temporarily blinded (or hardened) to Yeshua their Messiah (Romans 11:25). Paul writes that Israel will eventually be saved when the deliverer will come from Zion and take away their sins (Romans 11:26-27).

That Israel has come out of every conflict it has fought, with greater strength and prosperity than before, points to the power of the God of their salvation, and the very name ‘Yeshua,’ Jesus, means Salvation! Isaiah spoke to this when he said: “See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him” (Isaiah 40:10).

Through the chaos we are witnessing daily, let us be encouraged in the promise of His protection to His chosen ones and His judgment against those who touch them in anger. The appearance of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, to redeem all things is eagerly awaited (Titus 2:13-14). His hand will be raised in judgement against the nations who have plundered His people, and His arms will be open to receive all who have put their trust in Him. It is a blessed advent both Jew and Gentile can regard with the greatest joy!

Cuando se estaba librando la guerra árabe-israelí de junio de 1967, mi novia en ese momento y un par de sus amigos estaban hablando con uno de sus profesores de primer año de secundaria al respecto. Su maestra mencionó que con los enormes ejércitos que tenían a Israel rodeado, estaba superado en número y armamento, y sería aniquilado.

Mi novia respondió con certeza: "Oh, Israel no solo sobrevivirá, sino que vencerá".

"¿Cómo sabes eso?", desafió. Ella dijo: "Porque la Biblia lo dice". Se burló de su ignorancia de catorce años.

El sabado, quinto día de la guerra, y después de la victoria de Israel al tomar los Altos del Golán el día anterior, los cinco ejércitos árabes se hartaron de las constantes victorias de Israel en el campo de batalla y pidieron la paz. En sólo seis días, Israel había derrotado a cinco ejércitos nacionales que se enfrentaron a ellos al mismo tiempo, cuadruplicando su tamaño a través de la tierra que había capturado, que incluía desde la península egipcia del Sinaí hasta el Canal de Suez. La mano de Dios para ayudar a la pequeña nación judía era evidente y el mundo entero quedó atónito.

Desde su estadidad en 1948, cuando Satanás ha desatado sus perros de guerra sobre la nación escogida de Dios, los perros han sido enviados de vuelta a sus amos aullando.

Cuando Israel declaró su independencia el 14 de mayo de 1948, los cinco ejércitos árabes bien armados de Egipto, Siria, Líbano, Jordania e Irak declararon la guerra a la pequeña nación. Los judíos lucharon con los pocos recursos que tenían. Según todos los indicios, el Estado judío debería haber sido aniquilado en su Guerra de Independencia de 1948, y en la Crisis de Suez de 1956, y en la Guerra de los Seis Días de 1967, y en la Guerra de Yom Kippur de 1973, y en la Guerra del Líbano de 1982, hasta su gran conflicto actual con Hamás y Hezbolá en su última Guerra del 7 de Octubre. En todos los conflictos en los que ha salido victorioso, no ha sido sólo por las armas o la ayuda de las superpotencias, sino por la intervención sobrenatural. Después del ataque sorpresa de la Guerra de Yom Kippur de 1973, donde el comienzo parecía sombrío para los israelíes, la arrogancia excesivamente confiada de las victorias de la Guerra de los Seis Días se desinfló. Recuerdo a un israelí diciendo: "¡Fue el Dios de Israel quien nos salvó esta vez!"

Pocos de los que cantan "Del río al mar, Palestina será libre", saben a qué río y mar se refiere, ni entienden que significa deshacerse de todos los judíos de la tierra. Llama a erradicar a los judíos, desde el río Jordán en el este hasta el mar Mediterráneo en el oeste, toda la nación de Israel, ¡un segundo Holocausto judío!

Satanás está haciendo todo lo posible para destruir a Israel, pero la Palabra de Dios dice que la nación se mantendrá. El Mesías no regresará a la ciudad de Nueva York, Washington DC, Londres o París. Ni a su regreso sus pies tocarán las siete colinas de Roma, sino el monte de los Olivos en Jerusalén, que estaba en Israel la última vez que lo comprobé (Zacarías 14:4). Él gobernará la Tierra con toda su fuerza y justicia en el trono eterno de Su antepasado David, desde Su ciudad capital de Jerusalén (2 Samuel 7:16, Isaías 2:1-4, Apocalipsis 20:4). Satanás entiende que no hay judíos significa que no hay noticias, excepto que hablan de su exterminio total, y que no hay un pueblo elegido para que el Mesías regrese.

Tocar la niña de los ojos de Dios habla de tocar la pupila o la parte más preciosa y sensible de Su Ser. ¡Aquellos que están empeñados en la destrucción de aquellos que Dios ha escogido como Suyos pronto serán saqueados, y para su vergüenza por los mismos a quienes han esclavizado! Yeshua Hamashiach, el León Rugiente de Judá, no permitirá que los enemigos de Su pueblo permanezcan para siempre, ni que tengan éxito en sus planes para exterminarlos.

Israel no ha sido excluido del pacto ni lo será jamás. La nación y el pueblo judío de todo el mundo todavía están aquí, pero temporalmente cegados (o endurecidos) a Yeshúa su Mesías (Romanos 11:25). Pablo escribe que Israel eventualmente será salvo cuando el libertador venga de Sion y quite sus pecados (Romanos 11:26-27).

El hecho de que Israel haya salido de cada conflicto que ha peleado, con mayor fuerza y prosperidad que antes, apunta al poder del Dios de su salvación, y el mismo nombre 'Yeshúa', Jesús, significa ¡Salvación! Isaías habló a esto cuando dijo: "Mira, el Señor Soberano viene con poder, y gobierna con brazo poderoso. He aquí que su galardón está con él, y su recompensa le acompaña" (Isaías 40:10).

A través del caos que presenciamos a diario, seamos alentados en la promesa de Su protección a Sus elegidos y Su juicio contra aquellos que los tocan con ira. La aparición de nuestro gran Dios y Salvador, Jesucristo, para redimir todas las cosas es esperada con impaciencia (Tito 2:13-14). Su mano se alzará para juzgar a las naciones que han saqueado a su pueblo, y sus brazos estarán abiertos para recibir a todos los que hayan puesto su confianza en él. ¡Es una bendición que tanto los judíos como los gentiles pueden considerar con el mayor gozo!

Garbage In, Garbage Out

 

Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” Matthew 15:10-11 (NIV)

I worked for an air freight forwarder that had 140 stations, worldwide. The computer system that was required to operate them from our General Office was enormous and needed many computer programmers to maintain it. I was on good terms with many of them and I picked up a bit of programmer jargon in our conversations. One was “garbage in, garbage out.”

The short of it in computer science is that a programming error going into a program can defile what comes out of it. An error can be so minor as to be almost impossible to detect, yet will leave the program inoperable. I recall a programmer friend of mine who had a flawed program who after working for two days to fix it found in the hundreds of codes, he had put an ‘&’ sign in the wrong place. Garbage in, garbage out.

After Jesus’s statement to the Pharisees on what true defilement looked like, His disciples came to Him and said, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?” (Matthew 15:12). Jesus followed the Law of Moses but not the traditions of the Elders. These were the traditions of their fathers before them who took the Pentateuch commandments and added many extra rules and regulations that God never intended. If He had wanted them, it seems He would have given them all to Moses. These additional rules were so burdensome that Jesus said the Pharisees piled them onto others but would not even lift a finger to help them follow them.

These men loved to be seen doing things in public to be honored by others, like making a show of giving to the needy just to be seen as ‘generous,’ or standing and praying in the synagogue, and even on street corners! They would signal virtue by dressing with obvious religious overtones. It was not to honor God but gain points before men. It was hypocrisy and Jesus said it would be the only reward they would get. He taught that as the Pharisees sat in the seat of the authority of Moses, to do as they say but not as they do (Matthew 6:5, 23:1-10).

A garbage in, garbage out lifestyle leads to Pharisaical actions that come from a belief that service to God is keeping the outside of the cup clean and shiny while ignoring everything within that seethe with resentments, unjust judgments, spirits unwilling to forgive, and many other corruptions. Jesus continually pointed this out to the religious hierarchy, yet they rejected a broken and contrite heart before the Lord that would clean the inside of the cup.

I mentioned one time to a group that we recoil at four letter profanities, but if you stop to think about it, they are just words, syllables, and sound waves. They enter the ear, and the auditory nerve sends them to the brain which in turn become a sound we recognize and understand but hearing them does not defile us. The one from whom it comes out of is defiled for it is what is in their heart. I went on to say, “Those words leave us thinking they themselves are vile in and of themselves and cause us to cringe. They are only the example of what lies within the heart.

We Christians have our own four-letter words we use with anger and impunity, like j-e-r-k, and f-o-o-l, or what I call ‘The Fivers,’ I-d-i-o-t, d-u-m-m-y and m-o-r-o-n. We feel they are just expressions of truth and are OK because they are not in the column of nastier words, yet these ‘acceptable’ four and fivers are just as deadly in their intent to belittle and degrade men and women formed in the image of God. Jesus warns in Matthew 5:22 of the judgment for those who use them against others.” One woman was shocked and said, “I never thought of it like that!” Honestly, I am ashamed to say for years neither had I.  

Garbage in, garbage out is not necessarily so in spiritual matters. The garbage we allow to fester within is manifested as garbage without. Jesus is not as concerned with words, syllables, and sounds that come in, for those do not defile us. His concern is their source which does. He wants to bring to it His cleansing.

David had it right when he prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). The only thing that can flow out to others from a heart like that is Living Water to a thirsty world. No garbage in that at all, just a pure heart and renewed spirit, a clean cup outside and in.

Basura que entra, basura que sale

Trabajé para un agente de carga aérea que tenía 140 estaciones en todo el mundo. El sistema informático que se requería para operarlos desde nuestra Oficina General era enorme y necesitó de muchos programadores informáticos para su mantenimiento. Estaba en buenos términos con muchos de ellos y aprendí un poco de jerga de programador en nuestras conversaciones. Una de ellas era "basura que entra, basura que sale".

En resumen, en ciencias de la computación, un error de programación en un programa puede contaminar lo que sale de él. Un error puede ser tan pequeño que sea casi imposible de detectar, pero dejará el programa inoperable. Recuerdo a un amigo programador que tenía un programa defectuoso y que después de trabajar durante dos días para arreglarlo encontró en los cientos de códigos, había puesto un signo '&' en el lugar equivocado. Basura que entra, basura que sale.

Después de la declaración de Jesús a los fariseos sobre lo que era la verdadera contaminación, sus discípulos se acercaron a él y le dijeron: "¿Sabes que los fariseos se escandalizaron al oír esto?" (Mateo 15:12). Jesús siguió la Ley de Moisés, pero no las tradiciones de los Ancianos. Estas fueron las tradiciones de sus padres antes que ellos, quienes tomaron los mandamientos del Pentateuco y agregaron muchas reglas y regulaciones adicionales que Dios nunca tuvo la intención. Si los hubiera querido, parece que se los habría dado todos a Moisés. Estas reglas adicionales eran tan onerosas que Jesús dijo que los fariseos las amontonaban sobre otros, pero ni siquiera movían un dedo para ayudarlos a seguirlas.

A estos hombres les encantaba ser vistos haciendo cosas en público para ser honrados por los demás, como hacer un espectáculo de dar a los necesitados solo para ser vistos como 'generosos', o pararse y orar en la sinagoga, ¡e incluso en las esquinas de las calles! Señalarían la virtud vistiéndose con obvias connotaciones religiosas. No era para honrar a Dios, sino para ganar puntos delante de los hombres. Era hipocresía y Jesús dijo que sería la única recompensa que obtendrían. Enseñó que así como los fariseos se sentaban en el trono de la autoridad de Moisés, hacer lo que dicen, pero no lo que hacen (Mateo 6:5, 23:1-10).

Un estilo de vida de entrada y salida de basura conduce a acciones farisaicas que provienen de la creencia de que el servicio a Dios es mantener el exterior de la copa limpio y brillante mientras se ignora todo lo que hay dentro que hierve con resentimientos, juicios injustos, espíritus que no están dispuestos a perdonar y muchas otras corrupciones. Jesús continuamente señaló esto a la jerarquía religiosa, sin embargo, rechazaron un corazón quebrantado y contrito ante el Señor que limpiaría el interior de la copa.

Una vez mencioné a un grupo que retrocedemos ante las blasfemias de cuatro letras, pero si te paras a pensarlo, son solo palabras, sílabas y ondas sonoras. Entran en el oído, y el nervio auditivo los envía al cerebro, que a su vez se convierte en un sonido que reconocemos y entendemos, pero escucharlos no nos contamina. Son solo el ejemplo de lo que hay dentro del corazón.

Él quiere llevar a ello Su purificación.

David tenía razón cuando oró: "Crea en mí, oh Dios, un corazón puro; y renueva un espíritu recto dentro de mí" (Salmo 51:10). Lo único que puede fluir a los demás desde un corazón como ese es el Agua Viva para un mundo sediento. No hay basura en eso, solo un corazón puro y un espíritu renovado, una taza limpia por fuera y por dentro.

When Our Children Step Off the Path

 

“See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand…” Deuteronomy 32:39 (NIV)

I had a call from a dear friend this past week who shared his hurting heart over a son who has had a wayward disposition from his early years. The young man had just finished another stay of expensive rehabs. My father-heart grieves with my friend as a parent and for his son I grieve with the heart of a dad.

My direction and training in bringing up my children and grandchildren have not always gone the way I had hoped at the beginning. As was his regular custom, Jōb interceded to God for his children’s spiritual welfare (Jōb 1:5). As a dad, and grandfather, I daily do the same. It is imperative we do it, for in it is demonstrated our deep and unconditional love for them along with the power of God to intercede on their behalf. I am convinced that God’s word remains current, powerful, and able to save from every difficulty in their lives and our own. I know they see it and appreciate it.

I know a few adults who have raised their children in the way they should go in the Lord (Proverbs 22:6) and were disappointed and distressed when they stepped off the straight path and did not return. I have heard a couple of those parents ask, “What did I do wrong?” Unfortunately, I have even been told by some that when they had the courage to share that burden with other believers they were harshly judged. One sister said she was told by another lady in her church, “That child is acting out because of your poor parenting. If you had been a better parent and example, they would not be doing that.”

That kind of response is cruel and inexcusable. It undermines the grace of God between brothers and sisters in Christ, and deflects the call to bear one another’s burdens, and fulfill His Law (Galatians 6:2). It also disavows His love that offers free will choice to all, even the angels (Jude 1:6). Even Lucifer, the highest created being God made, was free to make that choice and he chose to rebel.

Was it mistreatment on God’s part, or a fault in God’s character and nature that caused Lucifer to make that choice? What of the freedom one-third of the angels had when they willingly sided with Satan? God does not deal in robots for they cannot choose love, they just do as programed. Free will is an amazing gift from a loving God. Lucifer was created with a free will, perfect in wisdom and beauty, being the cherubim that ‘covered,’ or had the closest access to God, guarding His holiness. Did God cause him to sin? No, He did not.

Scripture tells us God cannot be tempted with evil nor does He tempt with it. People are dragged away by their own evil desire and are seduced by it as was Lucifer who became the Devil and Satan the accuser of God’s people (James 1:13-14, Revelation 12:10). His desire was to overthrow God and occupy His throne uttering his five “I will” challenges before heaven and the Almighty (Isaiah 14:13-14).

There are instances of children who being raised in the most horrendous situations have chosen a moral life over ruin, their parents having had no say in that choice, and there had been a choice. So, whatever a parent has done has ultimately nothing to do with a child’s choices once they reach an age of accountability. Children have the freedom to choose to step off the path. A parent can intercede to control them, but they ultimately are not responsible for their desires and choices.

There is hope in our petitions for a wayward child. My petitions for my friend and family are that Christ will pull down all the wicked strongholds Satan has erected against them (2^nd Corinthians 10:3-5). I pray the same for my own family.  Our mightiest weapon is fervent prayer that profits in everything (James 5:16). They have divine power to demolish the strongholds in the Satanic realm. And why not? Has not God said no one can deliver out of His hand? In the Name and Authority of Jesus Christ that includes the minions of darkness and even Satan himself! When you submit yourselves to God, he will flee from you (James 4:7)!

Finally, I shared with my friend that I would faithfully hold him and his family up to the throne of grace, for God cannot be surprised, outfoxed, or defeated, but begins working immediately. A delay may not be from any lack of faith on your part, but because of warfare in the heavenly realm, meant to keep your answer from arriving and you discouraged (Daniel 10:12-13).

Do not be discouraged in prayer, as with Daniel, the answer was sent as soon as he prayed. It might be possible to make limited changes happen that could help ease a situation but it is not your responsibility to fix it, and in most cases you cannot. Continue to love the wayward one where they are at. You can do that while being fervent in prayer for everyone in the situation, including yourself. Trust God to move on it and everything will be done in His timing, correctly, and with His loving grace.

The One who measures the heavens with the breadth of His hand and can remember the name of any of the billions of stars anywhere in the universe can do amazing things for you and your loved ones. In all eternity past you have been remembered and He remembers you now. Let Him pull down your strongholds. The greatest news is because He lives, He can, and He is faithful and willing to do so. I can only say Hallelujah to that!

Cuando nuestros hijos se salen del camino

La semana pasada recibí una llamada de un querido amigo que compartió su corazón herido por un hijo que ha tenido un carácter caprichoso desde sus primeros años. El joven acababa de terminar otra estancia de costosa rehabilitación. Mi corazón paterno llora con mi amigo como padre y por su hijo yo lloro con el corazón de un padre.

Mi dirección y entrenamiento en la crianza de mis hijos y nietos no siempre han ido como esperaba al principio. Como era su costumbre habitual, Jōb intercedió ante Dios por el bienestar espiritual de sus hijos (Jōb 1:5). Como padre y abuelo, todos los días hago lo mismo. Es imperativo que lo hagamos, porque en él se demuestra nuestro profundo e incondicional amor por ellos junto con el poder de Dios para interceder por ellos. Estoy convencido de que la Palabra de Dios sigue siendo actual, poderosa y capaz de salvar de toda dificultad en sus vidas y en la nuestra. Sé que lo ven y lo aprecian.

Conozco a algunos adultos que han criado a sus hijos en el camino que deben seguir en el Señor (Proverbios 22:6), y se sintieron decepcionados y angustiados cuando se salieron del camino recto y no regresaron. He escuchado a un par de esos padres preguntar: "¿Qué hice mal?" Desafortunadamente, algunos incluso me han dicho que cuando tuvieron el coraje de compartir esa carga con otros creyentes, fueron juzgados con dureza. Una hermana dijo que otra señora de su iglesia le dijo: "Ese niño se está portando mal debido a su mala crianza. Si hubieras sido un mejor padre y un mejor ejemplo, ellos no estarían haciendo eso".

Ese tipo de respuesta es cruel e inexcusable. Socava la gracia de Dios entre hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, y desvía el llamado a llevar las cargas de los demás y cumplir Su Ley (Gálatas 6:2). También repudia Su amor que ofrece libre albedrío a todos, incluso a los ángeles (Judas 1:6). Incluso Lucifer, el  ser creado  más elevado que Dios creó, fue libre de tomar esa decisión y eligió rebelarse.

¿Fue maltrato por parte de Dios, o una falla en el carácter y la naturaleza de Dios lo que hizo que Lucifer tomara esa decisión? ¿Qué hay de la libertad que tuvo un tercio de los ángeles cuando voluntariamente se pusieron del lado de Satanás? Dios no trata con robots porque no pueden elegir el amor, simplemente hacen lo que están programados. El libre albedrío es un regalo asombroso de un Dios amoroso. Lucifer fue creado con un libre albedrío, perfecto en sabiduría y belleza, siendo los querubines que 'cubrían', o tenían el acceso más cercano a Dios, guardando Su santidad. ¿Lo hizo pecar Dios? No, no lo hizo.

Las Escrituras nos dicen que Dios no puede ser tentado con el mal ni tienta con él. Las personas son arrastradas por su propio deseo maligno y son seducidas por él, como lo fue Lucifer que se convirtió en el Diablo y Satanás el acusador del pueblo de Dios (Santiago 1:13-14, Apocalipsis 12:10). Su deseo era derrocar a Dios y ocupar su trono pronunciando sus cinco desafíos de "quiero" ante el cielo y el Todopoderoso (Isaías 14:13-14).

Hay casos de niños que, criados en las situaciones más horrendas, han elegido una vida moral en lugar de la ruina, sin que sus padres hayan tenido voz en esa elección, y ha habido una elección. Por lo tanto, lo que sea que haya hecho un padre no tiene nada que ver con las decisiones de un niño una vez que alcanza la edad de responsabilidad. Los niños tienen la libertad de elegir salirse del camino. Un padre puede interceder para controlarlos, pero en última instancia no son responsables de sus deseos y elecciones.

Hay esperanza en nuestras peticiones por un niño descarriado. Mis peticiones para mis amigos y familiares son que Cristo derribe todas las fortalezas malvadas que Satanás ha erigido contra ellos (2 Corintios 10:3-5). Rezo lo mismo por mi propia familia.  Nuestra arma más poderosa es la oración ferviente que aprovecha todo (Santiago 5:16). Tienen poder divino para demoler las fortalezas en el reino satánico. ¿Y por qué no? ¿No ha dicho Dios que nadie puede librar de Su mano? ¡En el Nombre y Autoridad de Jesucristo eso incluye a los secuaces de las tinieblas e incluso al mismo Satanás! Cuando os sometáis a Dios, él huirá de vosotros (Santiago 4:7).

Finalmente, compartí con mi amigo que lo sostendría fielmente a él y a su familia en el trono de la gracia, porque Dios no puede ser sorprendido, burlado o derrotado, sino que comienza a trabajar de inmediato. Es posible que una demora no se deba a una falta de fe de su parte, sino a una guerra en el reino celestial, con la intención de evitar que su respuesta llegue y se desanime (Daniel 10:12-13).

No se desanimen en la oración, como en el caso de Daniel, la respuesta fue enviada tan pronto como oró. Es posible que se realicen cambios limitados que podrían ayudar a aliviar una situación, pero no es su responsabilidad solucionarlo y, en la mayoría de los casos, no puede hacerlo. Continúen amando al descarriado donde están. Puedes hacerlo mientras oras fervientemente por todos los que se encuentran en la situación, incluyéndote a ti mismo. Confía en Dios para que se mueva en ello y todo se hará en Su tiempo, correctamente y con Su gracia amorosa.

Aquel que mide los cielos con la amplitud de Su mano y puede recordar el nombre de cualquiera de los miles de millones de estrellas en cualquier parte del universo puede hacer cosas asombrosas por ti y por tus seres queridos. En toda la eternidad pasada has sido recordado y Él te recuerda ahora. Deja que Él derribe tus fortalezas. La mejor noticia es porque Él vive, Él puede, y Él es fiel y está dispuesto a hacerlo. ¡Solo puedo decir Aleluya a eso!

What God Will Never Despise

 

Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. Psalm 51:14 (NIV)

One of the most astounding things I have learned about God is how He calls and uses such imperfect and sinful people in His service. If you are looking for perfection, recall there was only one perfect person in Adam’s line, and we crucified Him!

Scripture sheds light on the fair and foul heroes of the Bible. David is probably the most glaring sinner in any biblical narrative who was used and blessed in that way. He was a very unempathetic husband (2^nd Samuel 6:20-22), and a weak and submissive father (13:21). He was an adulterer, guilty of murder (11:vss 4 & 15), and committed an act of disobedience that brought a plague upon Israel that killed 70,000 people in three days (24:15). Saul lost his kingdom through his disobedience, and the disobedient kings of Israel and Judah were judged for their uncompromising sins, losing their thrones. With what David did, why did God reward him with a throne that would last forever (2^nd Samuel 7:16)? It went from Saul’s kingly heart that was stubbornly unrepentant, to a young king with a heart that was contrite and broken.

When I introspect on my own poor choices and past mistakes, I marvel that God in His righteousness showed me mercy not giving me the judgment I know I deserved. I know I was not on the same level of David’s bad choices, but throughout my life I have not always lived up to the high expectations of God’s commandments. I am no David but my sins are still as darkly devastating in the eyes of the Lord as were his. How is it that I am still here? Thankfully, I have learned when He takes away our sin and guilt that is when our tongues will sing of His righteousness. In his plea for forgiveness David realized God would never despise these things (Psalm 51:17).

God is not seeking Viking warriors, nor women of Amazonian strength to do His will. He seeks warriors with broken spirits and contrite hearts and dirty hands He has made clean by His shed blood on the cross. He sustains us by His Living Water that He brings from our inner being (John 7:37-38).

We are not David, we are who we are, warts and all, some who have done as much or more than a David, and some who have done less. In our fight for dominance over God’s will, we experience our greatest victories in battle after we surrender.

When I have been faced with the choices in life’s uncertainties, I have asked myself “What makes me think I can do this job?” My answer is simply, “I cannot, for I am too weak.” Christ smiles at that and says, “That is wonderful to hear. You are the perfect person for this job.”

Lo que Dios nunca despreciará

Una de las cosas más asombrosas que he aprendido acerca de Dios es cómo Él llama y usa a personas tan imperfectas y pecaminosas en Su servicio. Si usted está buscando la perfección, recuerde que solo había una persona perfecta en la línea de Adán, ¡y nosotros lo crucificamos!

Las Escrituras arrojan luz sobre los héroes justos y malos de la Biblia. David es probablemente el pecador más evidente en cualquier narración bíblica que fue usado y bendecido de esa manera. Era un esposo muy poco empático (2 Samuel 6:20-22), y un padre débil y sumiso (13:21). Era un adúltero, culpable de asesinato (11:4 y 15), y cometió un acto de desobediencia que trajo una plaga sobre Israel que mató a 70.000 personas en tres días (24:15). Saúl perdió su reino por su desobediencia, y los reyes desobedientes de Israel y Judá fueron juzgados por sus pecados intransigentes, perdiendo sus tronos. Con lo que hizo David, ¿por qué Dios lo recompensó con un trono que duraría para siempre (2 Samuel 7:16)? Pasó del corazón real de Saúl, que no se arrepentía obstinadamente, a un joven rey con un corazón contrito y quebrantado.

Cuando hago una introspección sobre mis propias malas decisiones y errores pasados, me maravillo de que Dios en Su justicia me mostró misericordia al no darme el juicio que sé que merecía. Sé que no estuve al mismo nivel de las malas decisiones de David, pero a lo largo de mi vida no siempre he estado a la altura de las altas expectativas de los mandamientos de Dios. Yo no soy David, pero mis pecados siguen siendo tan oscuramente devastadores a los ojos del Señor como lo fueron los suyos. ¿Cómo es que sigo aquí? Afortunadamente, he aprendido que cuando Él quita nuestro pecado y culpa, es cuando nuestras lenguas cantarán de Su justicia. En su súplica de perdón, David se dio cuenta de que Dios nunca despreciaría estas cosas (Salmo 51:17).

Dios no está buscando guerreros vikingos, ni mujeres de fuerza amazónica para hacer Su voluntad. Él busca guerreros con espíritus quebrantados, corazones contritos y manos sucias que Él ha limpiado por Su sangre derramada en la cruz. Él nos sostiene por Su Agua Viva que Él trae de nuestro ser interior (Juan 7:37-38).

No somos David, somos lo que somos, con verrugas y todo, algunos que han hecho tanto o más que un David, y otros que han hecho menos. En nuestra lucha por el dominio sobre la voluntad de Dios, experimentamos nuestras mayores victorias en la batalla después de rendirnos.

Cuando me he enfrentado a las decisiones en las incertidumbres de la vida, me he preguntado: "¿Qué me hace pensar que puedo hacer este trabajo?" Mi respuesta es simplemente: "No puedo, porque soy demasiado débil". Cristo sonríe ante eso y dice: "Es maravilloso oír eso. Eres la persona perfecta para este trabajo".
