When the Lord Passed the Cheese

 

And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1^st Corinthians 10:11 (NIV)

One day after church Tommie and I decided to make ourselves some sandwiches with food her uncle had purchased at our local deli a few days earlier. After a few minutes a disagreeable odor filled the dining room. We both sniffed the air at the same time as she asked, “Did the dog do something in the house?” I admitted it sure smelled like he had not made it outside in time, but after a thorough check of all the rooms and under the dining room table turned up nothing we returned to our lunch. When we again started our sandwich prep, the revolting smell returned. Tommie began sniffing the food and said, “It’s this cheese. It’s bad. I’m going to throw it out.”

The next day she was telling her uncle about how the cheese he bought had gone bad so quickly and that she threw it out. He bristled and said, “You did what? It was beer cheese and it’s supposed to smell that way. That cheese was very expensive. I can’t believe you threw it away!” Years afterward, when we laughingly brought that up to him, he would say disgustedly, “I still can’t believe you threw it out! It may have stunk but that was valuable cheese!”

The lesson that came to mind was that every human is conceived in the ‘Imago Dei,’ the image of God, and has inestimable value, even the ones we think stink. We are all made in the likeness of the Godhead who said, “Let ‘us’ make man in ‘our’ Image,” (Genesis 1:1, Colossians 1:15-17, Genesis 1:2). He was not speaking to the angels for angels did not contribute to the creation of the heavens and the earth. God was speaking within the Triune Being, and it was so. Man and woman were created mentally, morally, and spiritually superior. The Imago Dei raises us above the levels of the animal kingdom in a clear and wide gulf of ability, reason, spirituality, and choice.

It is with embarrassment and some shame I confess the many times in my own life when I discarded others who I judged too smelly for my own good. It is only by the grace of God that He included me in His long suffering and patient loving kindness. I can say in my past I am the chief of sinners in the things I have done in attaching the stench of hurt and judgment on others made in the image of God. In that I can only cry as Paul did when he said, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25).

Only Jesus rescues, washes, sanctifies, and justifies dirty and broken hearts. When He does, our new smell rises to the Father as a pleasing and acceptable aroma. He used a batch of cheese to teach me a lesson of the value of every beating heart made in His Imago Dei. That may sound cheesy to those outside of Christ, but to all who have experienced that soul-cleansing work, it is no baloney.

Cuando el Señor pasó el queso

Un día después de la iglesia, Tommie y yo decidimos prepararnos unos sándwiches con la comida que su tío había comprado en nuestra tienda de delicatessen local unos días antes. Al cabo de unos minutos, un olor desagradable llenó el comedor. Los dos olfateamos el aire al mismo tiempo que ella preguntaba: "¿El perro hizo algo en la casa?" Admití que olía como si no hubiera salido a tiempo, pero después de una revisión minuciosa de todas las habitaciones y debajo de la mesa del comedor no encontré nada, volvimos a nuestro almuerzo. Cuando volvimos a comenzar nuestra preparación de sándwiches, el olor repugnante regresó. Tommie comenzó a olfatear la comida y dijo: "Es este queso. Es malo. Lo voy a tirar".

Al día siguiente le contó a su tío que el queso que había comprado se había echado a perder tan rápido y que lo tiró. Él se enfureció y dijo: "¿Hiciste qué? Era queso de cerveza y se supone que huele de esa manera. Ese queso era muy caro. ¡No puedo creer que lo hayas tirado!" Años después, cuando se lo mencionábamos entre risas, decía con disgusto: "¡Todavía no puedo creer que lo hayas tirado! Puede que apestara, ¡pero era un queso valioso!"

La lección que me vino a la mente fue que todo ser humano es concebido en la 'Imago Dei', la imagen de Dios, y tiene un valor inestimable. Es una semejanza de la Deidad que dijo: "Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen" (Génesis 1:1, Colosenses 1:15-17, Génesis 1:2). No estaba hablando a los ángeles, porque los ángeles no contribuyeron a la creación de los cielos y la tierra. Dios estaba hablando dentro del Ser Trino, y así fue. El hombre y la mujer fueron creados mental, moral y espiritualmente superiores. La Imago Dei nos eleva por encima de los niveles del reino animal en un claro y amplio abismo de habilidad, razón, espiritualidad y elección.

 Con vergüenza y algo de vergüenza confieso las muchas veces en mi propia vida en las que descarté a otros que juzgué demasiado malolientes para mi propio bien. Es solo por la gracia de Dios que me incluyó en Su larga paciencia y bondad amorosa. Puedo decir que en mi pasado soy el principal de los pecadores en las cosas que he hecho al atribuir el hedor del dolor y el juicio a otros hechos a la imagen de Dios. En eso solo puedo llorar como lo hizo Pablo cuando dijo: "¡Qué desdichado soy! ¿Quién me librará de este cuerpo que está sujeto a la muerte? ¡Gracias a Dios, que me libra por medio de Jesucristo nuestro Señor!" (Romanos 7:24-25).

Solo Jesús rescata, lava, santifica y justifica los corazones sucios y rotos. Cuando lo hace, nuestro nuevo olor se eleva al Padre como un aroma agradable y aceptable. Usó un lote de queso para enseñarme una lección del valor de cada corazón palpitante hecho en Su Imago Dei. Eso puede sonar cursi para aquellos que están fuera de Cristo, pero para todos los que han experimentado esa obra de limpieza del alma, no es una tontería.

The Benefits of Thanksgiving

 

One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were there not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Luke 17:15-18 (NIV)

Jesus healed ten men of the terminal disease of leprosy.  Out of the ten only one returned with thanksgiving and at that he was a despised Samaritan. The Samaritans lived in the land but were considered by their native Jewish neighbors to be non-Jews, hence Jesus’ reference to him as a foreigner. His words were probably a rebuke to shame the Jews who were with Him. That He pointed out a despised Samaritan was the only one who returned to give thanks and glorify God, the nine thankless men were more than likely fellow Jews, unmindful of the Lord’s grace and mercy.

According to the Mayo Clinic, gratitude and a thankful mindset have great benefits. They reduce stress and aggression, lessen anxiety, improve sleep, mood, and immunity. A spirit of gratitude can decrease depression, and chronic pain. It can even lower our risk of disease.

Those nine men who did not take the time to show their gratitude through the giving of thanks missed out on a deeply spiritual connection with their foretold messiah and God. Gratitude can lead us to give Him the glory He is due in all the ways He has worked in our lives. It can encourage us as gratitude makes us more aware that we can depend on Him to continue to work throughout our lifetime.

With all the negativity in our lives and the world at large we can be easily distracted. It becomes normal to keep focused on the things that can bring us down. Happiness is a choice. It can help our outlook but is mostly dependent on circumstances. If our happy circumstance suddenly has a downturn, happiness can become unhappy very quickly.

Joy is different. It is an internal confidence and conviction that abides even through unseemly circumstances. Your confidence in the trustworthiness of God remains. He is the same strong, loving heavenly Father who lives within your being. It is nice to be happy and it is nicer to rest in the constant joy of a dependable confidence in Him.

We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. There is too much to mention here, but if you take a moment to contemplate as our annual holiday of Thanksgiving approaches you can note the many blessings and benefits the Lord has supplied to your own life and family.

We can be like the nine who did not show an attitude of thanksgiving to God, or be like the one who did. As happiness is a choice, so is thanksgiving. Let us always return and give thanks with its many benefits. When you stop to count them there are so many, and they can cause us to fall at the feet of Jesus and in a loud voice give Him thanks.

Los beneficios del Día de Acción de Gracias

Jesús sanó a diez hombres de la enfermedad terminal de la lepra.  De los diez, solo uno regresó con acción de gracias, y por eso era un samaritano despreciado, uno que vivía en la tierra pero era considerado un no judío, de ahí la referencia de Jesús a él como un extranjero. Sus palabras fueron probablemente una reprimenda para avergonzar a los judíos que estaban con Él. Que Él señaló que un samaritano despreciado era el único que regresó para dar gracias y glorificar a Dios, los nueve hombres ingratos eran más que probablemente compañeros judíos, sin tener en cuenta la gracia y la misericordia del Señor.

Según la Clínica Mayo, la gratitud y una mentalidad agradecida tienen grandes beneficios. Reducen el estrés y la agresión, disminuyen la ansiedad, mejoran el sueño, el estado de ánimo y la inmunidad. Un espíritu de gratitud puede disminuir la depresión y el dolor crónico. Incluso puede reducir nuestro riesgo de enfermedad.

Esos nueve hombres que no se tomaron el tiempo para mostrar su gratitud a través de las gracias, se perdieron una conexión profundamente espiritual con su Mesías y Dios predichos. La gratitud puede llevarnos a darle la gloria que se merece en todas las formas en que ha obrado en nuestras vidas. Puede animarnos, ya que la gratitud nos hace más conscientes de que podemos depender de Él para seguir obrando a lo largo de nuestra vida.

Con toda la negatividad en nuestras vidas y en el mundo en general, podemos distraernos fácilmente. Se vuelve normal mantenerse enfocado en las cosas que pueden deprimirnos. La felicidad es una elección. Puede ayudar a nuestra perspectiva, pero depende principalmente de las circunstancias. Si nuestra circunstancia feliz de repente tiene un declive, la felicidad puede volverse infeliz muy rápidamente.

La alegría es diferente. Es una confianza y una convicción internas que perduran incluso a través de circunstancias indecorosas. Tu confianza en la confiabilidad de Dios permanece. Él es el mismo Padre celestial fuerte y amoroso que vive dentro de tu ser. Es agradable ser feliz y es más agradable descansar en el gozo constante de una confianza confiable en Él.

Tenemos mucho que agradecer en este Día de Acción de Gracias. Hay demasiado que mencionar aquí, pero si se toma un momento para contemplar a medida que se acerca nuestra fiesta anual de Acción de Gracias, puede notar las muchas bendiciones y beneficios que el Señor ha provisto a su propia vida y familia.

Podemos ser como los nueve que no mostraron una actitud de agradecimiento a Dios, o ser como el que sí lo hizo. Así como la felicidad es una elección, también lo es la acción de gracias. Volvamos siempre y demos gracias por sus muchos beneficios. Cuando te detienes a contarlos, hay tantos, que pueden hacer que caigamos a los pies de Jesús y le demos gracias en voz alta.

Hopeful Anticipation

 

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NIV)

Have you ever had times in your life that hovered over you and followed you around like a dark cloud?

I’m kidding, right? Who hasn’t? And did you ever have someone voluntarily come to you and say they would handle that crisis for you? I cannot speak for all, but that is something I have experienced in my own life. What a relief it was. When I received the news of that help my anticipation and hope of things working out in the positive could not be measured. It was, to me, the height of hopeful anticipation.

Where are you today? Worried about a task looming before you at school, home, work, or church? In today’s verse we find Paul desiring to fill his readers with the hope of joy and peace in Christ.

The joy he is speaking of reveals to believers the delightful assurance of anticipation to each of us to be had through the Holy Spirit’s divine intercession. It is an intercession so deeply from His heart for us that there are no words that could adequately interpret it (Romans 8:26). It could only be heard in sighs and groans that are fully understood as a lamentation and plea for you to the mind of God Himself. The peace is the natural result of the assurance that God is willing to fulfill His hope and purposes in you.

Christ will achieve all He has resolved in His plan for you. The greatest hope in His perfect holiness is it is there for your highest good in perfect power and authority over life and eternity. Because He is perfectly holy, everything in all His works for you remain perfect. That is exciting because His will for you is never some half-baked idea. Everything God wills for you has been thought through and will work to your highest good and His ultimate glory.

He will handle your burdens and requests with the greatest wisdom and mercies. For whatever you are facing now, to wherever you are facing it, He takes care of His own. If you are trusting in Christ to handle it, the anticipation of how He will meet it should absolutely cause the hair on your neck to tingle. That is like finding honey in the rock, beloved. Just taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him (Psalm 34:8). Sweet.

Anticipación esperanzada

¿Alguna vez has tenido momentos en tu vida que se cernieron sobre ti y te siguieron como una nube oscura?

Estoy bromeando, ¿verdad? ¿Quién no lo ha hecho? ¿Y alguna vez alguien se acercó voluntariamente a ti y te dijo que se encargaría de esa crisis por ti? No puedo hablar por todos, pero eso es algo que he experimentado en mi propia vida. ¡Qué alivio! Cuando recibí la noticia de esa ayuda, mi anticipación y esperanza de que las cosas salieran bien, no se podían medir. Fue, para mí, el colmo de la anticipación esperanzada.

¿Dónde estás hoy? ¿Le preocupa una tarea que se avecina ante usted en la escuela, el hogar, el trabajo o la iglesia? En el versículo de hoy encontramos a Pablo deseando llenar a sus lectores con la esperanza de gozo y paz en Cristo.

El gozo del que habla revela a los creyentes la deliciosa seguridad de la anticipación para cada uno de nosotros que se tendrá a través de la intercesión divina del Espíritu Santo. Es una intercesión tan profunda de Su corazón por nosotros que no hay palabras que puedan interpretarla adecuadamente (Romanos 8:26). Solo se podía escuchar en suspiros y gemidos que se entienden completamente como un lamento y una súplica por ti a la mente de Dios mismo. La paz es el resultado natural de la seguridad de que Dios está dispuesto a cumplir Su esperanza y propósitos en ti.

Cristo logrará todo lo que ha resuelto en Su plan para ti. La mayor esperanza en Su perfecta santidad es que está ahí para tu mayor bien, con perfecto poder y autoridad sobre la vida y la eternidad. Debido a que Él es perfectamente santo, todo en todas Sus obras para ti permanece perfecto. Eso es emocionante porque Su voluntad para ti nunca es una idea a medias. Todo lo que Dios quiere para ti ha sido pensado y obrará para tu mayor bien y Su máxima gloria.

Él se encargará de tus cargas y peticiones con la mayor sabiduría y misericordia. Porque lo que sea que estés enfrentando ahora, dondequiera que lo estés enfrentando, Él cuida de los Suyos. Si confías en que Cristo lo manejará, la anticipación de cómo Él lo enfrentará debería hacer que te hormiguee el vello del cuello. Eso es como encontrar miel en la roca, amados. Sólo prueben y vean que el Señor es bueno. Bienaventurado el que se refugia en Él (Salmo 34:8). Dulce.

When the Fire Has Passed

 

Do not be afraid, you wild animals, for the pastures in the wilderness are becoming green. The trees are bearing their fruit; the fig tree and the vine yield their riches. Joel 2:22 (NIV)

The Yellowstone fires of 1988 burned from June to November consuming approximately 793,880 acres, killing 2 civilians and at least 300 large mammals. I drove through the park in the summer of 2023, and in the 35 years after the infernos, I was greatly surprised at the destruction still visible. Thousands of dead trees still littered the landscape in every direction. Even with the devastation, the lands had become green and wooded again with a thriving wildlife.

It may seem at the outset of a wildfire that the destruction is a permanent disaster. It is difficult to recognize or appreciate the restorative power unleashed by a fire. In the aftermath of a wildfire, grass, and plant seeds dormant in the soil will immediately sprout with the rains. A wildfire’s high heat releases the seeds of different trees such as the quick growing mesquite and juniper, and other ‘pioneer’ (first growth) trees and foliage. Recovery from a major wildfire may require some human assistance, but forests will, in time, heal themselves (Frontline Wildfire Defense, www.frontlinewildfire.com).

Some of our greatest insights, maturity and spiritual growth can come after God allows a wildfire to burn out stagnant areas of growth in our lives. Whether that growth is unhealthy habits we cling to that hinder spiritual growth, or unconfessed sins that put limits on our relationship with Him, in any fire He will never leave us permanently devastated. Every burn God allows is a ‘controlled burn’ for He sees it removing things that can burden our souls with overgrowth. The removal of them will bring rest and freedom.

Forestry personnel will start any controlled burn with careful planning and supervision never leaving a fire unsupervised to let nature take care of itself alone. Jesus promised He would never leave us or forsake us, even to the end of time. His parting consolation to those of us who would believe was: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

He will use every burn to personally cleanse your life and will never allow it to destroy you. Yes, it may hurt and yes, it could leave scars, but in time you will step back and be surprised at the verdant growth the Lord brings you in your spirit and emotions. It can be a trustworthy and steadying influence.

Jesus Christ has all power and authority granted to Him from the Father. Any burn in your life is controlled by that power to burn only to where He holds the fire line, and no further. That is a righteously controlled burn that in its flame is personally cleansing. When the overgrowth is burned away, fresh, verdant growth follows. After the fire has passed, you will see beauty pushing itself up through the ashes. He will restore your wilderness and your trees will yield the riches of the fruit of the Spirit. In any fiery trial He is always your perfect Land Manager and Conservationist.

Cuando el fuego ha pasado

Los incendios de Yellowstone de 1988 ardieron de junio a noviembre consumiendo aproximadamente 793,880 acres, matando a 2 civiles y al menos 300 grandes mamíferos. Conduje por el parque en el verano de 2023 y, en los 35 años posteriores a los infiernos, me sorprendió mucho la destrucción que aún es visible. Miles de árboles muertos seguían ensuciando el paisaje en todas direcciones. Incluso con la devastación, las tierras se habían vuelto verdes y boscosas de nuevo, con una vida silvestre próspera.

Al comienzo de un incendio forestal, puede parecer que la destrucción es un desastre permanente. Es difícil reconocer o apreciar el poder restaurador que desata un incendio. Después de un incendio forestal, las semillas de césped y plantas inactivas en el suelo brotarán inmediatamente con las lluvias. El calor intenso de un incendio forestal libera las semillas de diferentes árboles, como el mezquite y el enebro de rápido crecimiento, y otros árboles y follaje "pioneros" (de primer crecimiento). La recuperación de un gran incendio forestal puede requerir algo de asistencia humana, pero los bosques, con el tiempo, se curarán solos (Frontline Wildfire Defense, www.frontlinewildfire.com).

Algunas de nuestras mayores percepciones, madurez y crecimiento espiritual pueden venir después de que Dios permite que un incendio forestal queme áreas estancadas de crecimiento en nuestras vidas. Ya sea que el crecimiento se deba a los hábitos poco saludables a los que nos aferramos y que obstaculizan el crecimiento espiritual, o a pecados no confesados que ponen límites a nuestra relación con Él, en cualquier fuego Él nunca nos dejará devastados permanentemente. Cada quemadura que Dios permite es una 'quema controlada', porque Él la ve eliminando cosas que pueden cargar nuestras almas con un crecimiento excesivo. La eliminación de ellos traerá descanso y libertad.

El personal forestal iniciará cualquier quema controlada con una cuidadosa planificación y supervisión, nunca dejando un incendio sin supervisión para dejar que la naturaleza se ocupe de sí misma. Jesús prometió que nunca nos dejaría ni nos abandonaría, ni siquiera hasta el fin de los tiempos. Su consuelo de despedida para aquellos de nosotros que creeríamos fue: "Y ciertamente yo estoy con vosotros todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo" (Mateo 28:20).

Él usará cada quemadura para limpiar personalmente tu vida y nunca permitirá que te destruya. Sí, puede doler y sí, puede dejar cicatrices, pero con el tiempo darás un paso atrás y te sorprenderás del crecimiento verde que el Señor te trae en tu espíritu y emociones. Puede ser una influencia confiable y estabilizadora.

Jesucristo tiene todo el poder y la autoridad que le ha sido concedida por el Padre. Cualquier quemadura en tu vida está controlada por ese poder de quemar solo hasta donde Él sostiene la línea de fuego, y no más allá. Esa es una quemadura justamente controlada que en su llama es una limpieza personal. Cuando se quema el crecimiento excesivo, sigue un crecimiento fresco y verde. Después de que el fuego haya pasado, verás la belleza empujándose a través de las cenizas. Él restaurará tu desierto y tus árboles producirán las riquezas del fruto del Espíritu. En cualquier prueba de fuego, Él es siempre el perfecto Administrador de Tierras y Conservacionista.

Bringing it Back Under Control

 

I run the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding. Psalm 119:32 (NIV)

When I was running relay races in high school, our four-man teams were taught to wait at our assigned place on the track and begin running when our next team member approached to pass the baton.

When the baton was being passed, we never looked back but held our hand out behind us as we ran trusting our teammate would catch up and place it in our hand as we sprinted toward the finish line. Looking backwards would have thrown our timing and cadence off, and slowed a lead by seconds which might have cost us the race. We had to fully trust that our teammate, in looking forward, saw where and when to place the baton.

Bringing things under control is easily done and can be a choice through faith in the One who is running the race with you and looking ahead. As most things in life that are a choice, such as forgiveness, embracing and sharing Christ’s selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional agápē (pronounced uh-GAH-pay) love, and trust (for trust is a choice), you can recenter yourself to godly control.

Consider the power and indwelling of the Holy Spirit in you as the consistent comforter for you and teacher who glorifies Christ and guides you to Him (John 16:13). Remembering a powerful God who was able to speak the universe into existence by His sheer will alone inspires awe and encouragement as you will contemplate His decisive supremacy and rule in your daily walk (Genesis 1:3-26). Take time to recount all the miraculous things God has done for you and that He is filled with loving kindness for you to fulfill your needs first, above your wants.

In my own walk I am filled with encouragement and wonder at the controlled power Jesus demonstrated while allowing the authorities to take Him prisoner. Then how, at that moment, He could have summoned 72,000 angels, 12 legions, to rescue Him, but in obedience to the Father refused to do so. His control saved us all when He was later nailed to a Roman cross and His shed blood completed the plan of His Father’s redemption (John 18:6, Matthew 26:53, John 19:30).

When things feel out of your control you can begin taking them back, that is by keeping your sight ahead and trusting your righteous Teammate, Christ Jesus. He sees everything and knows exactly where to spot the baton. It is a matter of trust. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, and your vindication like the noonday sun (Psalm 37:5-6).

Volver a tenerlo bajo control

Cuando corría carreras de relevos en la escuela secundaria, a nuestros equipos de cuatro hombres se les enseñaba a esperar en nuestro lugar asignado en la pista y comenzar a correr cuando nuestro próximo miembro del equipo se acercaba para pasar el testigo.

Cuando se pasaba el testigo, nunca miramos hacia atrás, sino que extendimos la mano detrás de nosotros mientras corríamos, confiando en que nuestro compañero de equipo nos alcanzaría y la pondría en nuestra mano mientras corríamos hacia la línea de meta. Mirar hacia atrás habría alterado nuestro ritmo y cadencia, y habría ralentizado una ventaja de segundos que podría habernos costado la carrera. Teníamos que confiar plenamente en que nuestro compañero, al mirar hacia adelante, viera dónde y cuándo colocar el testigo.

Poner las cosas bajo control es fácil de hacer y puede ser una elección a través de la fe en Aquel que está corriendo la carrera contigo y mirando hacia adelante. Como la mayoría de las cosas en la vida que son una elección, como el perdón, abrazar y compartir el amor desinteresado, sacrificial e incondicional de Cristo  y  la confianza (porque la confianza es una elección), puedes volver a centrarte en el control piadoso.

Considera el poder y la morada del Espíritu Santo en ti como el consuelo constante para ti y el maestro que glorifica a Cristo y te guía a Él (Juan 16:13). Recordar a un Dios poderoso que fue capaz de hablar al universo para que existiera solo por Su pura voluntad inspira asombro y aliento, ya que contemplará Su supremacía decisiva y su gobierno en su caminar diario (Génesis 1:3-26). Tómate el tiempo para contar todas las cosas milagrosas que Dios ha hecho por ti y que Él está lleno de bondad amorosa para que satisfagas tus necesidades primero, por encima de tus deseos.

En mi propio caminar, me lleno de aliento y asombro por el poder controlado que Jesús demostró al permitir que las autoridades lo tomaran prisionero. Entonces, ¿cómo, en ese momento, pudo haber convocado a 72.000 ángeles, 12 legiones, para rescatarlo, pero en obediencia al Padre se negó a hacerlo? Su control nos salvó a todos cuando más tarde fue clavado en una cruz romana y Su sangre derramada completó el plan de la redención de Su Padre (Juan 18:6, Mateo 26:53, Juan 19:30).

Cuando las cosas se sientan fuera de tu control, puedes comenzar a recuperarlas, es decir, manteniendo la vista hacia adelante y confiando en tu justo compañero de equipo, Cristo Jesús. Lo ve todo y sabe exactamente dónde colocar el bastón. Es una cuestión de confianza. Encomienda tu camino a Jehová, confía en él, y él hará esto: Él hará resplandecer tu justiciero como la aurora, y tu justicia como el sol del mediodía (Salmo 37:5-6).

We Never Need to Wing it

 

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalm 91:4 (NIV)

Dad had some interesting personal stories on things he had witnessed with the farm animals in his care. He often spoke of how intelligent the barnyard animals were. He mentioned several times how if one of the local kids happened to pass a shadow over a mother hen, she would squat and begin squawking and spread her wings. No matter where her chicks were in the yard they would run to her and get under her wings to huddle and take refuge. When I asked why he said, “That shadow might have been from a hunting hawk on the wing and she was protecting her children. A hawk would have to go through her first to get to them.”

There have been a few times in my life when I saw the shadow and witnessed His protection, and I am pretty sure other times when I was unaware of His wings overshadowing my situation, He was always watching, always faithful. That I am here to share this after some 70+ years is testimony to His gracious care.

The psalmist’s explanation is the perfect word picture of who the Lord is. We can always run to Him in any circumstance and any situation, whether it be danger or temptation. God is our refuge from every assault. He says, “Run to Me. I will keep you safe and warm.” If a chick would light out on its own it would be easy pickings for a hawk. As it is, as we run under His wings of protection, we are under the shadow of the Almighty, and to get to us Satan would have to go through Him first.

The Lord will cover and protect, empowering you with inner strength through His Eternal Spirit. We never have to wing it, that is His job. In his doxology, Jude writes of Christ our Lord: “To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen” (Jude 24-25).

Nunca necesitamos improvisar

Papá tenía algunas historias personales interesantes sobre cosas que había presenciado con los animales de granja a su cuidado. A menudo hablaba de lo inteligentes que eran los animales de corral. Mencionó varias veces que si uno de los niños del lugar pasaba una sombra sobre una gallina, ella se ponía en cuclillas y comenzaba a graznar y extendía sus alas. No importaba dónde estuvieran sus polluelos en el patio, corrían hacia ella y se metían debajo de sus alas para acurrucarse y refugiarse. Cuando le pregunté por qué, dijo: "Esa sombra podría haber sido de un halcón de caza en vuelo y ella estaba protegiendo a sus hijos. Un halcón tendría que atravesarla primero para llegar a ellos.

Ha habido algunas ocasiones en mi vida en las que he visto la sombra y he sido testigo de Su protección, y estoy bastante seguro de que otras veces en las que no me daba cuenta de que Sus alas ensombrecían mi situación, Él siempre estaba observando, siempre fiel. Que esté aquí para compartir esto después de unos 70+ años es testimonio de Su cuidado lleno de gracia.

La explicación del salmista es la imagen perfecta de quién es el Señor. Siempre podemos acudir a Él en cualquier circunstancia y en cualquier situación, ya sea peligro o tentación. Dios es nuestro refugio de todo asalto. Él dice: "Corre hacia mí. Te mantendré seguro y cálido". Si un polluelo se apagara por sí solo, sería presa fácil para un halcón. Tal como están las cosas, mientras corremos bajo Sus alas de protección, estamos bajo la sombra del Todopoderoso, y para llegar a nosotros, Satanás tendría que pasar primero por Él.

El Señor te cubrirá y protegerá, empoderándote con fuerza interior a través de Su Espíritu Eterno. Nunca tenemos que improvisar, ese es Su trabajo. En su doxología, Judas escribe acerca de Cristo nuestro Señor: "Al que es poderoso para guardaros sin tropezar y presentaros delante de su gloriosa presencia sin mancha y con gran gozo, al único Dios nuestro Salvador sea la gloria, el poder y la autoridad, por medio de Jesucristo nuestro Señor, antes de todos los siglos, ahora y por los siglos. Amén" (Judas 24-25).

Once and for All

 

Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. Hebrews 7:27 (NIV)

Ever wonder how those western movie shootouts can get 50 shots out of a 6 shooter without reloading? It seems those guns will fire till the cows come home. In real life the Second Law of Thermodynamics teaches that things wear out and run down. The only thing we could say is the Second Law just did not work in the nineteenth century as it does in the twenty-first. Those horse opera shootin’ irons just did not run down. Of course, according to Scripture we know things started running down and wearing out as soon as Adam and Eve realized they needed fig leaves.

The very first animal sacrifices were made after our first two parents invented religion, or man-made morality by attempting to cover their shame with the leaves of a tree. Sin is so ugly and pervasive in its horror that the only thing that could come close to satisfying God’s just hatred of it was the shedding of blood, and before the cross it had to be done again and again.

Because of sin’s dire consequences the LORD warned Adam that if he transgressed His commandments, death would be the penalty. He told him when he did, “You shall surely die,” or literally, “Dying, you shall die,” (Genesis 2:17). When Adam and Eve rebelled, they immediately died spiritually, setting a sure date in the future when they would die physically.

The first sacrificial blood was shed when God made garments of animal skin for them (Genesis 3:21). The sacrificial system was continued, being given as a commandment to Israel in the Law of Moses. It was an acceptable sacrificial system to God that could temporarily atone a person’s trespass. Every Jew had to keep bringing their sacrifices to the priests when they trespassed God’s commandments. It was tedious, time consuming, and demonstrated that the wages of sin always resulted in death (Romans 6:23).

Any justification that could be offered would never be enough. Temporary atonement took the offering of the blood of more animals as the years progressed. Sin destroys everything it touches, if not immediately, then its demanded debt will be collected at a future time (Numbers 32:23).

There is good news for you from the Throne of Grace; Scripture says you have an advocate, a supporter and promoter, with the Father (1^st John 2:1), and there is the better news of a great celebration. You can celebrate Christ’s great victory over the Devil, sin, and death, to be saved by the Son, His Righteousness, and a glorious resurrection to eternal life in Him.

It was impossible for the demands of sin to be permanently overcome by the blood of animal sacrifices (Hebrews 10:4). Today the permanent plan of God was set before Creation to save you by the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, so you could serve the Living God. Christ did it for you, once and for all time, and for all who would come to Him in belief!

De una vez por todas

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado cómo esos tiroteos de películas del oeste pueden obtener 50 disparos de un tirador de 6 sin recargar? Parece que esas armas dispararán hasta que las vacas regresen a casa. En la vida real, la Segunda Ley de la Termodinámica enseña que las cosas se desgastan y se deterioran. Lo único que podríamos decir es que la Segunda Ley simplemente no funcionó en el siglo XIX como lo hace en el XXI. Esos hierros de tiro de ópera de caballos simplemente no se agotaron. Por supuesto, de acuerdo con las Escrituras, sabemos que las cosas comenzaron a deteriorarse y desgastarse tan pronto como Adán y Eva se dieron cuenta de que necesitaban hojas de higuera.

Los primeros sacrificios de animales se hicieron después de que nuestros dos primeros padres inventaron la religión, o la moralidad hecha por el hombre, al intentar cubrir su vergüenza con las hojas de un árbol. El pecado es tan feo y penetrante en su horror que lo único que podía acercarse a satisfacer el justo odio de Dios hacia él era el derramamiento de sangre, y antes de la cruz tenía que hacerse una y otra vez.

Debido a las terribles consecuencias del pecado, el Señor le advirtió a Adán que si transgredía Sus mandamientos, la muerte sería el castigo. Cuando lo hizo, le dijo: "Ciertamente morirás", o literalmente: "Moribundo, morirás" (Génesis 2:17). Cuando Adán y Eva se rebelaron, inmediatamente murieron espiritualmente, fijando una fecha segura en el futuro cuando morirían físicamente.

La primera sangre del sacrificio fue derramada cuando Dios hizo prendas de vestir de piel de animal para ellos (Génesis 3:21). El sistema de sacrificios continuó, siendo dado como un mandamiento a Israel en la Ley de Moisés. Era un sistema de sacrificios aceptable para Dios que podía expiar temporalmente la ofensa de una persona. Cada judío tenía que seguir llevando sus sacrificios a los sacerdotes cuando transgredieran los mandamientos de Dios. Era tedioso, consumía mucho tiempo y demostraba que el salario del pecado siempre resultaba en la muerte (Romanos 6:23).

Cualquier justificación que se pueda ofrecer nunca será suficiente. La expiación temporal consistía en la ofrenda de la sangre de más animales a medida que pasaban los años. El pecado destruye todo lo que toca, si no inmediatamente, entonces su deuda exigida será cobrada en un tiempo futuro (Números 32:23).

Hay buenas noticias para ti desde el Trono de la Gracia; Las Escrituras dicen que tienes un abogado, un defensor y un promotor con el Padre (1 Juan 2:1), y ahí está la mejor noticia de una gran celebración. Usted puede celebrar la gran victoria de Cristo sobre el Diablo, el pecado y la muerte, para ser salvado por el Hijo, Su Justicia, y una gloriosa resurrección a la vida eterna en Él.

Era imposible que las exigencias del pecado fueran vencidas permanentemente por la sangre de los sacrificios de animales (Hebreos 10:4). Hoy el plan permanente de Dios fue puesto delante de la Creación para salvarlos por la sangre del Cordero de Dios, Jesucristo, para que puedan servir al Dios Vivo. ¡Cristo lo hizo por ti, de una vez por todas, y por todos los que vinieran a Él en creencia!
