Your Third Sunday

Easter is past. We venerate Christ and His resurrection from the dead. Easter is what I call Second Sunday, Christmas being First. But all kidding aside, there is a Third Sunday, and that is when an individual fully accepts and embraces the reality of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It is the Central Hub of the Christian faith. Without it, Christianity is just a dead religion. Paul writes in 1^st Corinthians 15:17: And if Christ has not been raised your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.

Up until a few years ago I had lived my Christian life under the misconception the arresters of Jesus were the ones who held the power to put Him to death. In fact, Jesus held the power to stop His arrest and trial at any time, demonstrating the fact by knocking the entire group of His arresters to the ground by the power and authority given to Him by His Father (John 18:4-6). Jesus told the Roman governor, Pilate, that he (Pilate) had no power in the matter of His arrest had it not been granted from heaven (John 19:11). Jesus allowed Himself to be arrested and those men who put Him on the cross, both Jew and Gentile, did not take the Life of Jesus. He gave it up and laid it down willingly. In that, He also said He had the power and authority to take it up and restore it to His body (John 2:19, 21).

The pre-crucifixion whipping and mistreatment of Jesus did not lead to the taking of His life, and neither did the chief weapon of Roman cruelty, the cross, kill Him. When He was mocked about coming down from the cross and saving Himself, He could have done so. How that would have played out is speculative. 

Jesus voluntarily remained on the cross to fulfill His Father’s full plan to make Eden’s trespass right and redeem us back to Himself (Genesis 3:15). The time to die was within His power and choosing, and when the Father’s full plan of redemption was finished Jesus dismissed His Spirit and His body died (Matthew 27:50, John 19:30). Even most skeptics are convinced Jesus was a historical figure and died on a Roman cross. But did He stay dead? That is the million-dollar question. Paul says, But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep [died] (1^st Corinthians 15:20).

C.S. Lewis put it best when he spoke of only three choices to make of Jesus that are left to us; first, either Jesus was a liar and was fully aware He was deceiving and misleading people, second, He was insane and believed He was truly God (a lunatic), or third, He was who He claimed to be, Lord.

If you do not know Him and want to, you simply must believe He is the Christ who wants to forgive your sins and cleanse your soul. No sin is too big to forgive, He is God after all. If you would feel more secure by praying a prayer, that is OK, too. It can give you a concrete time and place where you first believed. Pray this prayer: “Jesus, I want to believe in something greater than myself that will bring meaning to my life and I am hoping You are the one that can. I am honest in saying I am not sure about You but I want to know. Please reveal the reality of who you are to me. I am asking that you forgive my sins, and show me You are truth, and not a liar, sane and not lost in lunacy, and not some kind of fake, but You are Lord. Thank you for forgiving me. Lead me and guide me into a new and significant life in You. Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer for the first time this can be your third Sunday that will last into eternity. Now find a church of believers that practice the whole counsel of God so you can grow in grace and learn of Christ (Matthew 11:29-30). I usually encourage new believers to read the Gospel of John. Not 1^st, 2^nd, or 3^rd John. Those books will come later. Read the life of Jesus in the fourth book of the New Testament and get a good grounding of this Jewish messiah who accepts anyone who calls to Him in His holy name. If you have stepped away from Him, He has not abandoned you and has waited until now to have you come home. He is more than willing to open the door you closed those many years ago, and welcome you back with open arms. He even has a new suit of clothes for you to wear. Happy Resurrection Day!

Tu tercer domingo

Esta es  la Semana de la Pasión, es decir, mirando hacia atrás a la última semana de la vida terrenal y el ministerio de Jesús de Nazaret. La Pascua es lo que yo llamo el Segundo Domingo, siendo la Navidad el Primero. Pero bromas aparte, hay un Tercer Domingo, y es cuando un individuo acepta y abraza completamente la realidad de la resurrección corporal de Jesucristo de entre los muertos. Es el eje central de la fe cristiana. Sin ella, el cristianismo no es más que una religión muerta. Pablo escribe en 1 Corintios 15:17: Y si Cristo no ha resucitado, vuestra fe es vana, todavía estáis en vuestros pecados.

Hasta hace unos años, había vivido mi vida cristiana bajo la idea errónea de que los arrestadores de Jesús eran los que tenían el poder de matarlo.  De hecho, Jesús tenía el poder de detener Su arresto y juicio en cualquier momento, demostrando el hecho al derribar a todo el grupo de aquellos que vinieron a arrestarlo por el poder y la autoridad que Su Padre le dio (Juan 18:4-6). Jesús le dijo al gobernador romano, Pilato, que él (Pilato) no tenía poder en el asunto si no se lo hubiera concedido del cielo (Juan 19:11). Jesús permitió que lo arrestaran y aquellos hombres que lo pusieron en la cruz, tanto judíos como gentiles, no tomaron la Vida de Jesús. Renunció a ella de buena gana.

Los azotes y el maltrato de Jesús antes de la crucifixión no condujeron a que se le quitara la vida, y tampoco la principal arma de la crueldad romana, la cruz, lo mató. Cuando se burlaron de Él por bajar de la cruz y salvarse a sí mismo, pudo haberlo hecho. Cómo se habría desarrollado eso es especulativo. Jesús permaneció voluntariamente en la cruz para cumplir el plan completo de Su Padre de hacer que la transgresión del Edén fuera correcta y redimirnos de nuevo a Él (Génesis 3:15). El tiempo para morir estaba dentro de Su poder, y cuando se completó el plan completo de redención del Padre, Jesús despidió a Su Espíritu y Su cuerpo murió (Mateo 27:50). Incluso la mayoría de los escépticos están convencidos de que Jesús fue una figura histórica y murió en una cruz romana. Pero, ¿permaneció muerto? Esa es la pregunta del millón. Pablo dice: "Pero Cristo ya resucitó de entre los muertos, primicias de los que durmieron [murieron] (1 Corintios 15:20).

El centro de la fe cristiana es la resurrección de Jesús de entre los muertos. Sin ella, el cristianismo sería solo otra religión y Jesús solo otro proclamador que vino y se fue. C.S. Lewis lo expresó mejor cuando habló de solo tres opciones que debemos tomar de Jesús y que nos quedan a nosotros; Primero, o Jesús era un mentiroso y estaba plenamente consciente de que estaba engañando y engañando a la gente, Segundo, Él estaba loco y creía que Él era verdaderamente Dios (un lunático), o Tercero, Él era quien decía ser, Señor.

Si usted no lo conoce y quiere conocerlo, simplemente debe creer que Él es el Cristo que quiere perdonar sus pecados y limpiar su alma. Ningún pecado es demasiado grande para perdonar, Él es Dios después de todo. Si te sientes más seguro al hacer una oración, también está bien. Puede darte un momento y un lugar concretos en los que creíste por primera vez. Reza esta oración: "Jesús, quiero creer en algo más grande que yo mismo que le dará sentido a mi vida y espero que Tú seas el único que pueda. Soy honesto al decir que no estoy seguro de ti, pero quiero saberlo. Por favor, revélame la realidad de quién eres. Te pido que perdones mis pecados, y me muestres que Tú eres la verdad, y no un mentiroso, cuerdo y no perdido en la locura, y no una especie de farsante, sino que Tú eres el Señor. Gracias por perdonarme. Guíame y guíame a una vida nueva y significativa en Ti. Amén".

Si rezaste esa oración por primera vez, este puede ser tu tercer domingo. Ahora encuentra una iglesia de creyentes que practiquen todo el consejo de Dios para que puedas crecer en gracia y aprender de Cristo (Mateo 11:29-30). Por lo general, animo a los nuevos creyentes a leer el Evangelio de Juan. Ni 1º, ni 2º, ni 3º Juan. Esos libros vendrán después. Lea la vida de Jesús en el cuarto libro del Nuevo Testamento y obtenga una buena base de este mesías judío que acepta a cualquiera que lo invoque en Su santo nombre. Si te has alejado de Él, Él no te ha abandonado y ha esperado hasta ahora para que vuelvas a casa. Él está más que dispuesto a abrir la puerta que cerraste hace tantos años y darte la bienvenida con los brazos abiertos. Incluso tiene un traje nuevo para que te lo pongas. ¡Feliz Día de Resurrección!
