Religious Nuts and Bolts

 

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:5-6 (NIV)

Some years ago, when I was at the back of my local grocery store picking up some milk, my attention was brought to bear on a man at the registers who screamed that anyone who had not believed on Jesus as Lord were vile people and were going to burn in hell! I can still recall how angry that made me.

The only thing that was burning was my consternation at such a harsh and thoughtless outburst. I hotfooted it to the front to openly rebuke the man for his insensitivity, but he was already gone. I remember thinking the guy more than likely thought he had just done God a great service with his “preaching.”

Unfortunately, surveying the people still at the registers it was as I feared. Most were looking at one another with smirks and that mocking “Just another Christian nut” look. My heart was so grieved at the dishonor that fellow had just paid to the name of Christ and God’s patient and accepting love. These kinds of actions convince unregenerated hearts that being a follower of Jesus means becoming an emotionally frenzied weirdo. But the truth is the opposite. Being a Christ follower imparts peace, love, and self-control, which all bring a sound and settled mind (2^nd Timothy 1:7 KJV).

When Jesus interacted with others the greatest relational thing He could do was come to a house as a guest. The Middle-Eastern custom of hospitality was, and remains, a very special honor that can be paid to others that is deeply and socially interpersonal. This was the operating motive and way of Jesus’ ministry. Remember Zacchaeus and the relational time he had with Jesus that healed his heart, and brought salvation to his home (Luke 1:8-9)?

That’s the nuts of it. The bolts of it will hold us to Him in a relevant and applicable way to our world. Sharing the Good News in a loving and relatable way is spiritual salt. Those who taste will thirst for what we have. Only the Living Water of Christ Jesus can fully and permanently satisfy it (John 4:13-14). That is, only Christ’s life imparted to you can fully satisfy your hunger for God’s working in your life. Jesus said, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:37-38). A simple recipe of the truth. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ seasoned with salt, just add Living Water.

Tuercas y tornillos religiosos

Hace algunos años, cuando estaba en la parte trasera de mi tienda de comestibles local recogiendo un poco de leche, mi atención se centró en un hombre en las cajas registradoras que gritaba que cualquiera que no hubiera creído en Jesús como Señor era gente vil e iba a arder en el infierno. Todavía puedo recordar lo enojado que me hizo eso.

Lo único que ardía era mi consternación ante un arrebato tan duro e irreflexivo. Lo llevé al frente para reprender abiertamente al hombre por su insensibilidad, pero ya se había ido. Recuerdo que pensé que el hombre probablemente pensó que acababa de hacer un gran servicio a Dios con su "predicación".

Desgraciadamente, inspeccionar a la gente que aún estaba en las cajas registradoras fue lo que temía. La mayoría se miraban unos a otros con sonrisas burlonas y esa mirada burlona de "Solo otro loco cristiano". Mi corazón estaba tan afligido por la deshonra que aquel hombre acababa de rendir al nombre de Cristo y al amor paciente y tolerante de Dios. Este tipo de acciones convencen a los corazones no regenerados de que ser un seguidor de Jesús significa convertirse en un bicho raro emocionalmente frenético. Pero la verdad es todo lo contrario. Ser un seguidor de Cristo imparte paz, amor y dominio propio, todo lo cual trae una mente sana y asentada (2 Timoteo 1:7).

Cuando Jesús interactuaba con los demás, lo mejor que podía hacer era ir a una casa como invitado. La costumbre de hospitalidad de Oriente Medio era, y sigue siendo, un honor muy especial que se puede rendir a los demás y que es profunda y socialmente interpersonal. Este fue el motivo operativo y el camino del ministerio de Jesús. ¿Recuerdas a Zaqueo y el tiempo relacional que tuvo con Jesús que sanó su corazón y trajo la salvación a su hogar (Lucas 1:8-9)?   

Eso es lo loco de todo. Los rayos de ella nos mantendrán a Él de una manera relevante y aplicable a nuestro mundo. Compartir las Buenas Nuevas de una manera amorosa y cercana es sal espiritual. Los que prueben tendrán sed de lo que tenemos. Solo el Agua Viva de Cristo Jesús puede satisfacerla plena y permanentemente (Juan 4:13-14). Es decir, solo la vida de Cristo que te ha sido impartida puede satisfacer plenamente tu hambre de la obra de Dios en tu vida. Jesús dijo: "El que tenga sed, venga a mí y beba. Todo el que cree en mí, como dice la Escritura, de en él brotarán ríos de agua viva" (Juan 7:37-38). Una receta sencilla de la verdad. La gracia de nuestro Señor Jesucristo sazonada con sal, solo agregue Agua Viva.

Not Like Other Pigs

 

“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’” Luke 18:13 (NIV)

When I was a teenager, I remember a Christian youth leader who commented on the Pharisee who prayed a prayer of both thanksgiving and loathing concerning a hated Jewish publican, or tax collector. The Pharisee prayed, “I thank God that I am not like this tax collector!” The tax collector, sorely aware of his trespasses, was too ashamed to even lift his eyes to heaven. Beating his chest penitently he pleaded for God’s merciful forgiveness. Which one left that place fully justified and fully forgiven?

I do not even remember the name of this youth leader now, but I have never forgotten a word picture he gave to our group that beautifully illustrated his point. He said, “In our own imperfections none of us are worthy to cast shame and unrighteous judgment on another person. This kind of haughtiness would be like the farmer’s prize pig that was taken into the house and given a bath. After being cleaned up as soon as the door was opened, the pig went sailing out of it toward the mud hole saying, ‘I thank my God that I am not like other pigs.’”

It is all too easy to judge one-sidedly, without facts or to even judge with malice. When we tell a person their slime is showing, we might find ourselves up to our ham hocks in our own slippery quagmire.

Jesus taught that we will be judged by the same standard by which we judge (Matthew 7:2). That ought to frighten us into immediately stopping that tidbit of gossip as soon as the temptation to share it comes to mind. The most disgusting gossip I have heard has been couched as a prayer request for someone else’s problem and struggle.

When we stop to consider this story from our Lord it ought to be a crystal-clear guideline to how our treatment of others ought to be, especially within the household of faith. When we are tempted to judge others that is the time to beat our chest and pray for mercy as for there but for the grace of God go us all back to our own mud hole. The tax collector pleaded for mercy. Let him who is without fault cast the first eye-beam (Matthew 7:5).

The strength to do right only comes from Christ our Savior for He has fully saved us from it! Mercy is a wonderful thing to receive and mercy is also a wonderful gift to give. When we have been washed, we no longer need to live like other pigs, and when the door is opened, the only one we need to fly to is Jesus.

No como otros cerdos

Cuando era adolescente, recuerdo a un líder juvenil cristiano que comentó sobre el fariseo que rezaba una oración de agradecimiento y repugnancia hacia un odiado publicano judío, o recaudador de impuestos. El fariseo oró: "¡Doy gracias a Dios por no ser como este recaudador de impuestos!" El recaudador de impuestos, muy consciente de sus transgresiones, estaba demasiado avergonzado para siquiera levantar los ojos al cielo. Golpeándose el pecho penitentemente, suplicó el perdón misericordioso de Dios. ¿Quién abandonó ese lugar completamente justificado y completamente perdonado?

Ni siquiera recuerdo el nombre de este líder juvenil ahora, pero nunca he olvidado una imagen de palabras que le dio a nuestro grupo que ilustraba bellamente su punto. Él dijo: "En nuestras propias imperfecciones, ninguno de nosotros es digno de arrojar vergüenza y juicio injusto sobre otra persona. Este tipo de altivez sería como el cerdo de premio del granjero que fue llevado a la casa y se le dio un baño. Después de ser limpiado tan pronto como se abrió la puerta, el cerdo salió volando hacia el pozo de barro diciendo: 'Doy gracias a mi Dios porque no soy como los otros cerdos'".

Es demasiado fácil juzgar unilateralmente, sin hechos o incluso juzgar con malicia. Cuando le decimos a una persona que se le muestra la baba, es posible que nos encontremos hasta los corvejones en nuestro propio lodazal resbaladizo.

Jesús enseñó que seremos juzgados por el mismo estándar por el cual juzgamos (Mateo 7:2). Eso debería asustarnos y hacernos detener de inmediato ese chisme tan pronto como nos venga a la mente la tentación de compartirlo. El chisme más repugnante que he escuchado ha sido expresado como una petición de oración por el problema y la lucha de otra persona.

Cuando nos detenemos a considerar esta historia de nuestro Señor, debe ser una guía clara de cómo debe ser nuestro trato hacia los demás, especialmente dentro de la familia de la fe. Cuando somos tentados a juzgar a los demás, ese es el momento de golpearnos el pecho y orar por misericordia, ya que si no fuera por la gracia de Dios, nos devolvamos a todos a nuestro propio pozo de lodo. El recaudador de impuestos suplicó clemencia. El que está sin culpa, que arroje el primer rayo (Mateo 7:5).

La fuerza para hacer el bien solo viene de Cristo, nuestro Salvador, porque Él nos ha salvado completamente de ella. La misericordia es algo maravilloso de recibir y la misericordia también es un regalo maravilloso para dar. Cuando hemos sido lavados, ya no necesitamos vivir como otros cerdos, y cuando se abre la puerta, el único al que tenemos que volar es a Jesús.

A Miraculous Midnight

 

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25 (NIV)

Paul and his missionary companion, Silas, found themselves under arrest and incarcerated in a Roman prison for boldly sharing the good news of God in the Roman colony of Philippi. For this reason, the local magistrates had them stripped, and severely whipped.

At midnight, their faith led them to prayer and singing hymns to God as their Roman jailer was in his quarters. When there was suddenly an earthquake, all the cells were opened and the chains were loosened from the prisoners. When the jailer appeared and saw what had happened, he immediately realized it would cost him his life.

Roman law dictated that if any prisoner escaped from Roman oversight, the one in charge of their captivity could be put to death. The jailer, seeing the cell doors open, thought all the prisoners under his guard had escaped. He was about to commit suicide until Paul stopped him, telling him all the prisoners were still there. The Lord had the man’s attention.

The answer to his question of what he needed to do to be saved was simply, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.” His entire household could even come under its blessing (Acts 16:31).

In past devotional moments I have used this passage to impart the simplicity and ease of beginning a relationship with Christ. The thief on the cross who was assured he would be with Jesus in paradise that day is a case in point (Luke 23:42-43). He was nailed to a Roman cross and had no other option except to believe.

These instances are indeed miraculous, but how much more that after receiving beatings and with open wounds instead of bemoaning their fate they offered midnight prayers to their Lord with hymns of praise?

It has been pointed out to me that the greater miracle of Paul’s Malta shipwreck was not surviving a viper’s bite but that Paul was out in the cold rain helping gather firewood. There is a quote that is both simple, yet profound: “It has been said that God’s salvation is free, but if you choose to follow it, it will cost you everything you’ve got.”

It does not matter where you are, or where you have been to experience the kind of power that brought the joy of a miraculous midnight to two beaten men in a Philippian Roman hellhole. The answers the Lord brings are as different as the circumstances that make them.

There are no guarantees of physical earthquakes and the opening of prison cells every time. The guarantee that your trust through any pain and humiliation you endure is your testimony to Christ’s keeping power. There is an honoring and glory in Him that touches you and the others listening to your own midnight hymns of praise.

The joy of the Lord is your strength and as a believer that can give courage to light up the night and loosen any chains the world, the Devil, or even yourself have placed upon your soul. It does not need to be that way, and as a latter rain falls in the desert those that persevere will quickly find their own place of struggle transformed into a green and verdant land. Paul writes, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

He will do so for you in your desert experience. You will have your wounds washed not by any jailer but the Hand that washes your wounds will be the gentle and loving hand of the Master Himself.

Cerca de la medianoche, Pablo y Silas estaban orando y cantando himnos a Dios, y los otros prisioneros los escuchaban. Hechos 16:25 (NVI)

Una medianoche milagrosa

Pablo y su compañero misionero, Silas, fueron arrestados y encarcelados en una prisión romana por compartir con valentía las buenas nuevas de Dios en la colonia romana de Filipos. Por esta razón, los magistrados locales los desnudaron y los azotaron severamente.

A medianoche, su fe los llevó a orar y cantar himnos a Dios mientras su carcelero romano estaba en sus aposentos. Cuando de repente hubo un terremoto, se abrieron todas las celdas y se soltaron las cadenas de los prisioneros. Cuando el carcelero apareció y vio lo que había sucedido, inmediatamente se dio cuenta de que le costaría la vida.

La ley romana dictaba que si algún prisionero escapaba de la supervisión romana, el que estaba a cargo de su cautiverio podía ser condenado a muerte. El carcelero, al ver las puertas de las celdas abiertas, pensó que todos los prisioneros bajo su guardia habían escapado. Estaba a punto de suicidarse hasta que Paul lo detuvo, diciéndole que todos los prisioneros seguían allí. El Señor tenía la atención del hombre.

La respuesta a su pregunta de lo que necesitaba hacer para ser salvo fue simplemente: "Cree en el Señor Jesucristo y serás salvo". Toda su casa podría incluso estar bajo su bendición (Hechos 16:31).

En momentos devocionales pasados he usado este pasaje para impartir la simplicidad y facilidad de comenzar una relación con Cristo. El ladrón en la cruz a quien se le aseguró que estaría con Jesús en el paraíso ese día es un ejemplo de ello (Lucas 23:42-43). Fue clavado en una cruz romana y no tuvo otra opción que creer.

Estos casos son ciertamente milagrosos, pero ¿cuánto más que, después de recibir palizas y con heridas abiertas, en lugar de lamentar su suerte, ofrecieron oraciones de medianoche a su Señor con himnos de alabanza?

Se me ha señalado que el mayor milagro del naufragio de Pablo en Malta no fue sobrevivir a la mordedura de una víbora, sino que Pablo estaba afuera bajo la lluvia fría ayudando a recoger leña. Hay una cita que es a la vez simple, pero profunda: "Se ha dicho que la salvación de Dios es gratuita, pero si eliges seguirla, te costará todo lo que tienes".

No importa dónde estés, o dónde hayas estado para experimentar el tipo de poder que trajo el gozo de una medianoche milagrosa a dos hombres golpeados en un infierno romano de Filipos. Las respuestas que trae el Señor son tan diferentes como las circunstancias que las producen.

No hay garantías de terremotos físicos y de que se abran las celdas de las prisiones cada vez. La garantía de que tu confianza a través de cualquier dolor y humillación que soportes es tu testimonio del poder guardador de Cristo. Hay un honor y una gloria en Él que te toca a ti y a los demás que escuchan tus propios himnos de alabanza a medianoche.

El gozo del Señor es tu fuerza y como creyente que puede dar valor para iluminar la noche y aflojar cualquier cadena que el mundo, el Diablo o incluso tú mismo hayan puesto en tu alma. No tiene por qué ser así, y a medida que cae una lluvia tardía en el desierto, aquellos que perseveran encontrarán rápidamente su propio lugar de lucha transformado en una tierra verde y verde. Pablo escribe: "No nos cansemos de hacer el bien, porque a su debido tiempo segaremos cosecha, si no nos damos por vencidos" (Gálatas 6:9).

Él lo hará por ti en tu experiencia en el desierto. Tus heridas no serán lavadas por ningún carcelero, sino que la Mano que lava tus heridas será la mano suave y amorosa del Maestro mismo.

Weeds in the Flower Bed

 

 

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Luke 6:37 (NIV)

 

One of the jobs I disliked as a youngster was weeding flower beds. I carried an intense aversion to it throughout my life. There is a part within many Christians that reacts to the weedy areas of others. This tends to display to the unchurched more of what the Christian is against rather than for. Many non-Christians see most of the Christian community as a ‘reactive’ group of individuals who are locked into a mass attack upon them. While it is true that Paul tells Christians to confront and rebuke persistent sin (1^st Timothy. 5:20), it seems more Christians are clucking their tongues at the person and not the sin.

 As Christians, we sometimes forget that when it comes to sin there are natural laws of sowing and reaping. Paul says that rage and sinful passions are a direct result of the severity of the law (Romans 4:15, 5:20, 7:5). In going beyond the mandate of grace many of us overstep the law of love (Matthew 22:37-40, John 13:34, Romans 13:8-10) and self-righteously attack what we hate or have been biased against. Jesus identified the basic reactive Christian as someone who has an eye-for-an-eye attitude (Matthew 5:38).

 This can be a great dilemma for believers for we know there is a higher standard that God demands we live by. We want to be holy because He is holy and we want to stand against sin, and we should, but with balance in our approach and love and a spirit of grace. Jesus said, “A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35). 

 When a reactive Christian sees a person’s yard in disarray, they immediately want to knock on their door and tell them how unsightly the weeds in their garden look and “remove them as soon as possible.” I know Christians who believe a weeded flower bed is all that is needed, but that mindset ignores the unregenerate heart which allowed the weeds to flourish in the first place.

 The Lord wants us to drop the reactive stance in our testimony and go proactive. A proactive lifestyle does not express power through disfavor but expresses the power of Christ by living and walking within the loving sway of the Spirit. The power of a proactive Christian lies in their ability to love others as themselves.

 A proactive Christian will not judge another person’s flower bed unsoundly. Their proactivity will cause them to introduce the homeowner to their Gardener and show them how He brought their own flower bed from a pile of ashes to a beautiful showplace of vibrant colors. The Gardener is the one who makes the flower bed grow. At times a loving hand of assistance is really appreciated and can help pull the weeds, if not from another’s garden, then from their own.

 Malezas en el macizo de flores

 

Uno de los trabajos que no me gustaba cuando era joven era desmalezar macizos de flores. Llevé una intensa aversión hacia ella durante toda mi vida. Hay una parte dentro de muchos cristianos que reacciona a las áreas de maleza de los demás. Esto tiende a mostrar a los que no asisten a la iglesia más de lo que el cristiano está en contra en lugar de a favor. Muchos no cristianos ven a la mayor parte de la comunidad cristiana como un grupo "reactivo" de individuos que están encerrados en un ataque masivo contra ellos. Si bien es cierto que Pablo les dice a los cristianos que confronten y reprendan el pecado persistente (1 Timoteo 5:20), parece que más cristianos están chasqueando la lengua contra la persona y no contra el pecado.

 Como cristianos, a veces olvidamos que cuando se trata de pecado hay leyes naturales de siembra y cosecha. Pablo dice que la ira y las pasiones pecaminosas son un resultado directo de la severidad de la ley (Romanos 4:15, 5:20, 7:5). Al ir más allá del mandato de la gracia, muchos de nosotros sobrepasamos la ley del amor (Mateo 22:37-40, Juan 13:34, Romanos 13:8-10) y atacamos con justicia propia lo que odiamos o contra lo que hemos sido parciales. Jesús identificó al cristiano reactivo básico como alguien que tiene una actitud de ojo por ojo (Mateo 5:38).

 Este puede ser un gran dilema para los creyentes, porque sabemos que hay un estándar más alto por el que Dios exige que vivamos. Queremos ser santos porque Él es santo y queremos estar en contra del pecado, y debemos hacerlo, pero con equilibrio en nuestro enfoque y amor y un espíritu de gracia. Jesús dijo: "Un mandamiento nuevo os doy: Que os améis los unos a los otros. Como yo os he amado, así debéis amaros los unos a los otros. En esto conocerán todos que sois mis discípulos, si os amáis los unos a los otros" (Juan 13:34-35). 

 Cuando un cristiano reactivo ve el jardín de una persona en desorden, inmediatamente quiere llamar a su puerta y decirle lo desagradables que se ven las malas hierbas en su jardín y "quitarlas lo más pronto posible". Conozco cristianos que creen que un macizo de flores desmalezado es todo lo que se necesita, pero esa mentalidad ignora el corazón no regenerado que permitió que las malas hierbas florecieran en primer lugar.

El Señor desea que dejemos de lado la postura reactiva en nuestro testimonio y seamos proactivos. Un estilo de vida proactivo no expresa el poder a través de la desaprobación, sino que expresa el poder de Cristo al vivir y caminar dentro del dominio amoroso del Espíritu. El poder de un cristiano proactivo radica en su capacidad de amar a los demás como a sí mismo.

 Un cristiano proactivo no juzgará el macizo de flores de otra persona de manera poco sólida. Su proactividad hará que presenten al dueño de la casa a su jardinero y le muestren cómo Él trajo su propio macizo de flores de un montón de cenizas a un hermoso lugar de exhibición de colores vibrantes. El Jardinero es el que hace crecer el macizo de flores. A veces, una mano amorosa de ayuda es realmente apreciada y puede ayudar a arrancar las malas hierbas, si no del jardín de otra persona, entonces del propio.

The Knot at the End of Your Rope

 

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:28 (NIV)

When my two daughters were little and began to explore and climb there were times they would find themselves where they could not go forward or back. Ever the watchful parent I would quietly stand behind them to ensure they would not fall. They would inevitably say, “Daddy, please help me,” and I would rescue them from their plight. I never walked away to leave them in their predicament and fear to teach them a lesson. In my own life’s predicaments and fears, neither has Christ.

Remember the saying, “When you reach the end of your rope tie a knot in it and hang on”? That sounds more like an experiment in white-knuckling desperation with no daddy standing by.

When you reach the end of your rope and admit your helplessness you have moved where He wants you. When you are there, you are in His perfect will for your life and where He works perfectly for you. As the Everlasting Father, His ways are perfectly tailored to you and your needs.

I have had answers that were not what I had prayed for, and some answers that were a disappointment, but His love for me never failed and He never left me hanging to teach me a lesson. At times in my past when I thought, “Hey, Lord, this situation has gone on way too long. Where are You and why are you not doing something?” His patient and loving reply has always been reassuring: “I’m untying this knot at the end of your rope. El nudo al final de la cuerda

Cuando mis dos hijas eran pequeñas y comenzaron a explorar y escalar, había momentos en que se encontraban en las que no podían avanzar ni retroceder. Siempre siendo un padre vigilante, me paraba silenciosamente detrás de ellos para asegurarme de que no se cayeran. Inevitablemente decían: "Papá, por favor ayúdame", y yo los rescataba de su difícil situación. Nunca me alejé para dejarlos en su aprieto y temer darles una lección. En los aprietos y temores de mi propia vida, Cristo tampoco lo ha hecho.

¿Recuerdas el dicho: "Cuando llegues al final de tu cuerda, haz un nudo en ella y agárrate"? Eso suena más como un experimento de desesperación sin papá a la vista.

Cuando llegas al final de tu cuerda y admites tu impotencia, te has movido a donde Él quiere que estés. Cuando estás allí, estás en Su perfecta voluntad para tu vida y donde Él obra perfectamente para ti. Como el Padre Eterno, Sus caminos se adaptan perfectamente a ti y a tus necesidades.

He tenido respuestas que no eran por las que había orado, y algunas respuestas que fueron una decepción, pero Su amor por mí nunca falló y nunca me dejó colgada para enseñarme una lección. A veces en mi pasado cuando pensaba: "Oye, Señor, esta situación ha durado demasiado tiempo. ¿Dónde estás y por qué no estás haciendo algo?" Su respuesta paciente y amorosa siempre ha sido tranquilizadora: "Estoy desatando este nudo al final de tu cuerda. No te preocupes, no me he cansado de ti ni de tu situación. Mi entendimiento es algo que no puedes comprender y me estoy encargando de esto para ti para tu mayor bien".

Aquel que creó los confines de la tierra ciertamente puede cuidar de la punta de tu cuerda.

This Same Jesus

 

We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 2^nd Peter 1:19 (NIV)

In speaking of the unknown, there is the fear of what is there right now, and the fear of what will come. God wants us to know what He, and He alone has planned for all eternity, not to scare us but to prepare us.

At the Mount of Transfiguration, Peter, James, and John were allowed to witness the future glorified state Christ would have. They beheld His resurrected glory as He spoke with Moses and Elijah of His departure from the earth that was yet to be (Matthew. 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-9, Luke 9:30-31). It is the same glory John saw in Revelation 1:13-16.

 It is important to distinguish between the incarnate Word of God, Jesus Christ, and the written word. Both are avenues of revelation from the mind and heart of God, but faith is not based on cleverly invented stories or the dangerous doctrines of the heresies Peter and the early church fathers stood against. Your true faith’s foundation is historical fact, which was corroborated by eyewitness accounts that were true, verified by hundreds of brothers and sisters who witnessed it at the same time (1^st Corinthians 15:6), and is trustworthy. What is to come?

Peter said they [the disciples] did not devise sly and crafty stories to mislead. Instead, he testified they were eyewitnesses of Christ’s power and majesty. In fact, at the moment of Christ’s transfiguration, they heard God Himself speak from heaven to honor and glorify His one and only Son (2^nd Peter 1:16-17). Peter encourages every believer in the solid witness of the prophetic word of God that enlightens the understanding. How does that affect you in the here and now?

First, the transfiguration testifies of the hope that Christ, who now being departed from us materially, will return to us physically. At His ascension two angels testified to this, saying, “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). The glory Peter, James, and John saw at the transfiguration gave them a foretaste of His kingdom. It was a physical demonstration they would share with the world after His resurrection (Matthew 17:9).

Second, in that unforgettable experience Peter was reminded of the comfort offered in the written word that details the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption. That word has validity, power, and authority. Peter’s experience of the splendor in the transfiguration experience speaks of the surety of God’s written revelation.

Paul writes that all Scripture’s inspiration is pneō, ‘God-breathed’ (2^nd Timothy 3:16). Peter validates that and says the prophets of ancient Israel were not speaking on their own when they penned their prophetic insights (2^nd Peter 1:20). This speaks volumes concerning Yeshua (Jesus) of Nazareth as the only messianic figure who meets every qualification of Scripture. He is the only one whose messianic presence has not faded but whose relevancy has only gained strength over the years.

It will do us all well to pay attention to God’s remarkable prophetic message. The darkness in creation’s curse is slowly being overpowered by the Light of the world, Jesus Christ. Those who believe in the power and worth of Christ will not walk in darkness (John 8:12). The day is dawning and the Father has promised the Son will rise. Be strengthened and encouraged in the sure word of God and what God has in store for you, in both word and deed. He remains this same Jesus. He has never changed and He never will. Live in His hope and embrace His Light!

Este mismo Jesús

Al hablar de lo desconocido, está el miedo a lo que está ahí ahora mismo, y el miedo a lo que vendrá. Dios quiere que sepamos lo que Él, y solo Él, ha planeado para toda la eternidad, no para asustarnos, sino para prepararnos.

En el Monte de la Transfiguración, a Pedro, Santiago y Juan se les permitió presenciar el futuro estado glorificado que tendría Cristo. Contemplaron Su gloria resucitada mientras hablaba con Moisés y Elías de Su partida de la tierra que aún estaba por ser (Mateo 17:1-9, Marcos 9:2-9, Lucas 9:30-31). Es la misma gloria que Juan vio en Apocalipsis 1:13-16.

 Es importante distinguir entre el Verbo de Dios encarnado, Jesucristo, y la palabra escrita. Ambas son vías de revelación de la mente y el corazón de Dios, pero la fe no se basa en historias ingeniosamente inventadas o en las peligrosas doctrinas de las herejías a las que Pedro y los padres de la iglesia primitiva se oponían. El fundamento de tu verdadera fe es un hecho histórico, que fue corroborado por relatos de testigos oculares que eran verdaderos, verificados por cientos de hermanos y hermanas que lo presenciaron al mismo tiempo (1 Corintios 15:6), y es digno de confianza. ¿Qué está por venir?

Pedro dijo que ellos [los discípulos] no inventaron historias astutas y astutas para engañar. En cambio, testificó que eran testigos oculares del poder y la majestad de Cristo. De hecho, en el momento de la transfiguración de Cristo, escucharon a Dios mismo hablar desde el cielo para honrar y glorificar a su unigénito Hijo (2 Pedro 1:16-17). Pedro anima a cada creyente en el testimonio sólido de la palabra profética de Dios que ilumina el entendimiento. ¿Cómo te afecta eso en el aquí y ahora?

En primer lugar, la transfiguración da testimonio de la esperanza de que Cristo, que ahora se ha apartado de nosotros materialmente, volverá a nosotros físicamente. En su ascensión, dos ángeles dieron testimonio de esto, diciendo: "Este mismo Jesús, que ha sido tomado de vosotros al cielo, volverá de la misma manera que le habéis visto ir al cielo" (Hechos 1:11). La gloria que Pedro, Santiago y Juan vieron en la transfiguración les dio un anticipo de Su reino. Era una demostración física que compartirían con el mundo después de Su resurrección (Mateo 17:9).

En segundo lugar, en esa experiencia inolvidable, a Pedro se le recordó el consuelo que se ofrece en la palabra escrita que detalla el cumplimiento del plan de redención de Dios. Esa palabra tiene validez, poder y autoridad. La experiencia de Pedro del esplendor en la experiencia de la transfiguración habla de la certeza de la revelación escrita de Dios.

Pablo escribe que toda la inspiración de las Escrituras es pneō, "inspirada por Dios" (2 Timoteo 3:16). Pedro valida eso y dice que los profetas del antiguo Israel no hablaban por sí mismos cuando escribieron sus percepciones proféticas (2 Pedro 1:20). Esto dice mucho acerca de Yeshua (Jesús) de Nazaret como la única figura mesiánica que cumple con todos los requisitos de las Escrituras. Es el único cuya presencia mesiánica no se ha desvanecido, pero cuya relevancia no ha hecho más que cobrar fuerza con el paso de los años.

A todos nos hará bien prestar atención al extraordinario mensaje profético de Dios. La oscuridad en la maldición de la creación está siendo lentamente dominada por la Luz del mundo, Jesucristo. Aquellos que creen en el poder y el valor de Cristo no caminarán en tinieblas (Juan 8:12). El día está amaneciendo y el Padre ha prometido que el Hijo resucitará. Siéntete fortalecido y animado en la palabra segura de Dios y en lo que Dios tiene reservado para ti, tanto en palabras como en hechos. Él sigue siendo este mismo Jesús. Él nunca ha cambiado y nunca lo hará. ¡Vive en Su esperanza y abraza Su Luz!

The Marvel of the I AM

 

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:13-14 (NIV)

Some names define and some can cause misperception. My wife, Tommie, was the last of three siblings. She was the final planned child and her father named her after himself. It has caused some eyebrows to raise when I say “My wife, Tommie,” until I add, “Tommie’s a she, named after her dad.” Some laugh, and some humorously show visible relief.

I have often thought how strangely it was that Jehovah identified Himself to Moses as the I AM. Why I AM? Is it a big mystery that God has revealed Himself in this way to those who love Him? It would certainly make sense if God is the answer to every question you can pose, and He wants you to know that is the core truth of who He is.

His first I AM is He is the becoming one. The second is He is our fullest blessing, our all-in-all; He has made Himself known as JEHOVAH-JIRAH-the LORD Our Provider, (re: Genesis 22:14); JEHOVAH-ROPHE-the LORD Our Healer, (re: Exodus 15:22-26); JEHOVAH-NISSI-the LORD our Banner, (re: Song of Solomon 2:4); JEHOVAH-M’KADDESH-the LORD Our SANCTIFIER, (re: Lev. 20:8); JEHOVAH-SHALOM-the LORD Our Peace, (re: Judges 6:24, Deut. 27:6, 1^st Kings 8:61); JEHOVAH-ELOHIM-LORD GOD, (re: Judges 5:3, Isaiah 17:6, Zephaniah 2:9, Psalm 59:5); JEHOVAH-TSIDKUNU-the LORD Our Righteousness, straight, firm, balanced in holiness and perfect in being, (re: Jeremiah 23:5-6).

A word search will reveal many more titles in His name.

God in Christ is a loving and compassionate Father and He expresses that love to you in His available attributes. He exhibits the same holy and compassionate character to those who put their trust in Him. Their covenant portion will never end. In that continued covenant these attributes will always exist and be available to you in all your situations.

Will He work the same in every case? Perhaps not exactly as in every case, but He will work for you in a personal way to your highest good and to His ultimate glory. He has been called a personal Savior. He prayed not only for His first century believers but for all who would ultimately come to believe in Him (John 17:20-21). That includes yourself today with the availability of His wondrous power working for you.

The I AM means “I AM the Ultimate Answer to your need, whether physical, mental or spiritual.” He can do all things. No one can successfully challenge His power and authority. He is not the God of I have been, He is the I AM, right here, right now.

He says, “I AM the God of all flesh, is there anything too hard for Me?” (Jeremiah 32:27). In your current circumstance He is willing to meet you in your necessity and become all you need, for He is, and will always be, your I AM.

La Maravilla del YO SOY

Algunos nombres definen y otros pueden causar una percepción errónea. Mi esposa, Tommie, era la última de tres hermanos. Ella fue la última niña planeada y su padre la nombró en su honor. Ha hecho que algunos levanten las cejas cuando digo "Mi esposa, Tommie", hasta que agrego: "Tommie es una ella, llamada así por su papá". Algunos se ríen y otros muestran un alivio visible con humor.

A menudo he pensado en lo extraño que fue que Jehová se identificara a Moisés como el YO SOY. ¿Por qué YO SOY? ¿Es un gran misterio que Dios se haya revelado de esta manera a aquellos que lo aman? Ciertamente tendría sentido si Dios es la respuesta a cada pregunta que puedas hacer, y Él quiere que sepas que esa es la verdad central de quién es Él.

Su primer YO SOY es Él es el que se está convirtiendo. La segunda es que Él es nuestra bendición más completa, nuestro todo en todo; Él se ha dado a conocer como JEHOVÁ-JIRAH-el SEÑOR Nuestro Proveedor, (re: Génesis 22:14); JEHOVÁ-ROFE, el SEÑOR Nuestro Sanador, (re: Éxodo 15:22-26); JEHOVÁ-NISSI-el SEÑOR nuestro Estandarte, (re: Cantar de los Cantares 2:4); JEHOVÁ-M'KADDESH-el SEÑOR Nuestro SANTIFICADOR, (re: Levítico 20:8); JEHOVÁ-SHALOM-el SEÑOR Nuestra Paz, (re: Jueces 6:24, Deuteronomio 27:6, 1 Reyes 8:61); JEHOVÁ-ELOHIM-SEÑOR DIOS, (re: Jueces 5:3, Isaías 17:6, Sofonías 2:9, Salmo 59:5); JEHOVÁ-TSIDKUNU-SEÑOR Nuestra Justicia, recto, firme, equilibrado en santidad y perfecto en ser, (re: Jeremías 23:5-6).

Una sopa de letras revelará muchos más títulos en Su nombre.

Dios en Cristo es un Padre amoroso y compasivo y Él expresa ese amor hacia ti en Sus atributos disponibles. Exhibe el mismo carácter santo y compasivo hacia aquellos que ponen su confianza en Él. Su porción del pacto nunca terminará. En ese pacto continuo, estos atributos siempre existirán y estarán disponibles para ti en todas tus situaciones.

¿Obrará de la misma manera en todos los casos? Tal vez no exactamente como en todos los casos, pero Él obrará para ti de una manera personal para tu mayor bien y para Su gloria suprema. Se le ha llamado un Salvador personal. Él oró no solo por sus creyentes del primer siglo, sino por todos los que finalmente llegarían a creer en Él (Juan 17:20-21). Eso te incluye a ti mismo hoy con la disponibilidad de Su maravilloso poder obrando para ti.

El YO SOY significa "YO SOY la Respuesta Definitiva a tu necesidad, ya sea física, mental o espiritual". Él puede hacer todas las cosas. Nadie puede desafiar con éxito Su poder y autoridad. Él no es el Dios del YO he sido, Él es el YO SOY, aquí y ahora.

Él dice, "YO SOY el Dios de toda carne, ¿hay algo demasiado difícil para Mí?" (Jeremías 32:27). En tu circunstancia actual, Él está dispuesto a encontrarte en tu necesidad y convertirse en todo lo que necesitas, porque Él es, y siempre será, tu YO SOY.
