When Things Got Ugly

 

Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” Mark 9:24 (NIV)

I once lived in a newer community still in the process of expansion and development. There were still many homes in our neighborhood that retained a rural quality. One day as I was working in my office, my oldest daughter came in and excitedly said, “Dad, come quick! There’s a llama in the front yard.” I smiled and said, “Uh-huh, sure.” As I was about to tell her to shut the door on the way out, she said, “No, really, Dad! There is a brown and white llama out front. Hurry or you’ll miss him!”

Something was up and her urgency caused me to go look. To my surprise as I peeked out the living room window, I saw a bunch of excited neighborhood kids standing around a llama with a young lady, who was holding him on a halter leash. She said she was taking him for a walk.

Seeing this critter up close was an interesting experience. His owner told us, “I named him Ugly because of his tendency to spit at people when annoyed.” We all stepped back. She had a bag of apricots and it was quite hilarious to watch him eat one. He’d move the fruit around in his mouth then spit out the seed. Afterward I thought of what I would have missed if I had allowed my disbelief to persist.

When it comes to believing God wants to work in our lives when things get ugly, most of us can miss what God has waiting for us. When we read in His word about the unsearchable riches He has for us in Christ Jesus, it can be all too easily dismissed. We do not doubt He can do great things but do we truly believe He can do great things in our situations, especially when they turn tough? Mark’s gospel mentions a fearful father whose son was critically ill. As a son of Abraham, this father was very familiar with the history of God’s mighty works among his people but had a hard time believing that the same God could, or would, work to heal his son. I can just see him putting his face in his hands as he asked for more faith. Instead of upbraiding this child of Abraham for his doubt, Jesus graciously healed his son (Mark 9:25).

This same Jesus who God raised from the dead is alive today, and graciously ever intercedes for you (Hebrews 7:25). He wants to do so much in your own life and the possibilities are just as real now as they were when the physical Jesus stood before this doubtful dad that day.

Jesus Christ will do great things on your behalf. He can, and He will! Put your complete trust in His hands. The Devil is very aware of the power and authority of Christ for he has witnessed it firsthand in the life of God incarnate and in His empty tomb. The only thing he can do is lie and deceive, but when things get ugly, you do not have to allow him to spit on you.

Cuando las cosas se pusieron feas

Una vez viví en una comunidad más nueva que todavía estaba en proceso de expansión y desarrollo. Todavía había muchas casas en nuestro vecindario que conservaban una calidad rural. Un día, mientras trabajaba en mi oficina, mi hija mayor entró y me dijo emocionada: "¡Papá, ven rápido! Hay una llama en el patio delantero". Sonreí y dije: "Ajá, claro". Cuando estaba a punto de decirle que cerrara la puerta al salir, ella dijo: "¡No, de verdad, papá! Hay una llama marrón y blanca al frente. ¡Apúrate o lo echarás de menos!"

Algo estaba pasando y su urgencia me hizo ir a mirar. Para mi sorpresa, cuando me asomé por la ventana de la sala de estar, vi a un grupo de niños emocionados del vecindario parados alrededor de una llama con una jovencita, que lo sostenía con una correa de cabestro. Dijo que lo iba a llevar a dar un paseo.

Ver a esta criatura de cerca fue una experiencia interesante. Su dueño nos dijo: "Lo llamé Feo por su tendencia a escupir a la gente cuando estaba molesta". Todos dimos un paso atrás. Tenía una bolsa de albaricoques y fue bastante gracioso verlo comer uno. Pasaba la fruta en su boca y luego escupía la semilla. Después pensé en lo que me habría perdido si hubiera permitido que mi incredulidad persistiera.

Cuando se trata de creer que Dios quiere obrar en nuestras vidas cuando las cosas se ponen feas, la mayoría de nosotros podemos pasar por alto lo que Dios tiene esperando para nosotros. Cuando leemos en Su Palabra acerca de las inescrutables riquezas que Él tiene para nosotros en Cristo Jesús, puede ser descartado con demasiada facilidad. No dudamos de que Él puede hacer grandes cosas, pero ¿realmente creemos que Él puede hacer grandes cosas en nuestras situaciones, especialmente cuando se vuelven difíciles? El evangelio de Marcos menciona a un padre temeroso cuyo hijo estaba gravemente enfermo. Como hijo de Abraham, este padre estaba muy familiarizado con la historia de las poderosas obras de Dios entre su pueblo, pero le costaba creer que el mismo Dios pudiera, o quisiera, obrar para sanar a su hijo. Puedo verlo poniendo su cara entre sus manos mientras pedía más fe. En lugar de reprender a este hijo de Abraham por sus dudas, Jesús sanó misericordiosamente a su hijo (Marcos 9:25).

Este mismo Jesús a quien Dios resucitó de entre los muertos está vivo hoy, y misericordiosamente siempre intercede por ti (Hebreos 7:25). Él quiere hacer mucho en tu propia vida y las posibilidades son tan reales ahora como lo eran cuando el Jesús físico se paró frente a este padre dudoso ese día.

Jesucristo hará grandes cosas a tu favor. ¡Él puede, y lo hará! Pon toda tu confianza en Sus manos. El Diablo es muy consciente del poder y la autoridad de Cristo, porque lo ha presenciado de primera mano en la vida de Dios encarnado y en Su tumba vacía. Lo único que puede hacer es mentir y engañar, pero cuando las cosas se ponen feas, no tienes que permitir que te escupa.
